The support fits well and is comfortable. More importantly it stopped the ITB problem that was plaguing my running and I could again enjoy it. I no longer need to use this but have no qualms about going back to it should any knee problems flare up.
TIP: You can wear this strap "upside down" (relative to the writing) and it will still work. This may seem crazy but if you wear the strap on your right knee (like I did) then the straps can sometimes catch on your left leg as you run which then loosens it off. If you wear it upside down on the right knee then the open end of the straps are on the outside where they don't catch and it remains in place better. For your left knee, wear it the correct way up (the writing reading the right way up)
overall if you suffer with knee problems and still want to train without worrying if your knee will hold out, Buy this and you will be running with the pack once again
I love hill walking but found myself in a constant cycle that made me consider giving it up. I would: go for a hike - feel like my knees were bursting uphill and downhill - knees would swell up afterwards - ice on knees - prescription anti-inflammatories - difficulty even bending knees for weeks - no walking until the flare-up had calmed down - repeat from the beginning.
As well as seeing a physio and podiatrist privately, I have tried a host of knee supports, from simple jumper's straps (worked well but not great) to super-expensive supports designed for snowboarding and using athletic tape above and below the kneecap.
I finally bought this Mueller strap a couple of weeks ago and tried it out while hiking up 2,000ft with plenty of scrambling too. It has been a revelation. It supports my kneecap well and prevents it moving too much but still allows for good movement of the joint thanks to the stretchy mesh back. It does not totally immobilise the knee, so may not be for all knee complaints, but it does a superb job of forcing the kneecap to do its job properly.
My only word of warning would be to not fasten it too tightly as I found it just needed a firm, rather than tight, fit to do its job. The lack of pain while descending steep slopes has convinced me I've finally found the right knee strap for me.
Today I ordered a second one for my other knee from the same seller (fast delivery, well packaged). An added bonus is that it is really high quality and is also hand washable. I might just make it up Scafell Pike one day despite my dodgy knees!
The lower the straps fits comfortably under the knee itself and seems to have a fairly solid tube in there which offered a surprising amount of support. This could be tightened or loosened easily to adjust the tension.
The back of the strap seems to be a flexible, but breathable material so even with all the walking, they never got too sweaty or uncomfortable. In addition, they dried out on the drive between mountains so no issues of putting on a damp support, even after an absolute soaking going up Snowdon.
The end result was knees that survived climbing over 3,400m and walking well over 20 miles of uneven ground without further injury!
The only criticism is superficial - the logo. To wear them comfortably in shorts (or to a lesser extent in trousers) you have to have the tabs sticking outwards otherwise they can rub the inside of your other leg. As there doesn't appear to be a left leg or right leg version, this means you have to put one on upside down. Fine if you're wearing trousers, but if you're wearing shorts you do look a bit of a Muppet with the logo on upside down (as you can see by the photo on a break coming down Scafell Pike). Having said that, if you're concerned about your looks, you probably shouldn't be wearing shorts with them anyway.
Overall, they were comfortable and effective. Well worth the money. I can't recommend them highly enough.
Be careful not to overtighten as you can cause other discomfort particularly if you have tight hamstrings.
