5.0 out of 5 stars A RICHLY WOVEN TAPESTRY OF EMOTIONS 28 July 2014
By Phyllis Eisenstadt - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase

"Mud Castles" reflects the fragility and evanescence of life. The characters are multidimensional and complex, and the author meticulously maintains each of their own particular voices and vernacular throughout the entire novel.

While this book is easy to read, the content is by no means simplistic; it is a psychosocial study of the evolution of a young boy's self-image and the reactions of those with whom he comes in contact. It deals with shyness, bullying, tenderness, friendship, and even a budding romance. Adults can relate to having had one or more of these experiences during their teen years; teenagers can relate to them now.

The historical details and venue descriptions so accurately portray the zeitgeist of that particular time and place that I was nostalgically transported back in time to neighborhoods, events, and a culture I knew so well as a child.

It has been said that what makes a novel most memorable is the frequency the characters are thought about after the novel is read. I find myself thinking about them often, and wondering what the rest of their lives would have been like had the story continued or had the author chosen to take different paths.

For people who like to get lost in a novel, "Mud Castles" is a must read.

Dr. Ostrov's superb opus is a unique legacy that his children and grandchildren will cherish for the rest of their lives.

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm Not From Brooklyn But I Liked It 8 Mar. 2015
By Annie Athens - Published on Amazon.com

I'm Not From Brooklyn, in fact I've only seen it from the bridge, on a four day unforgettable trip to New York. However, saying that, the descriptions were so detailed even capturing the atmosphere of those times, you felt as if you were there. Like some other readers I did feel that the minor characters could have been developed. you needed to feel more sympathy for the Mother, something was missing.
The story itself is certainly not a happy tale but there are some very amsuing incidents and good dialogue. I didn't find it depressing, and for once the ending was although surprising, realistic under the circumstances.
I would recommend this book. In fact I downloaded it for free but it is worth the price now (still low). Actually was very pleased as I had a problem with my Kindle battery, and thought I had lost the book only to find it on another page.
Well done Mel, it's a good story.
5.0 out of 5 stars Mud Castle An Interesting Story To Read 26 Sept. 2014

. Ostrov's story woke up many memories of my childhood and growing up in a family of inter-faith marriages. I was raised in the neighborhood mentioned in the story's
The locations, streets and scenes as described were very true to me. The characters were very believable as we're the circumstances of their lives.
Coming of age has different meaning for all of us. Clearly discrimanation, bullying were a part of that era. Unfortunately,
It still exists today.
I'm believe any one reading this book would enjoy the descriptions of the times.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful read concerning wonderful characters 18 Nov. 2014

From start to completion it was hard to put this book down. Being Jewish from Long Island and having spent five years during my OBGYN residency in Brooklyn allowed me a certain advantage to thoroughly enjoy the story. As the age old proverb goes "you don't have to be Jewish to enjoy this book"

The story is so believable and the characters quite genuine. The plot was not predictable nor was the outcome.

I can't wait for the author's next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully written vivid account of my growing up era/neighborhood/people and culture 25 Aug. 2014
By Diane Helen - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
I was born in 1950 , in a Jewish culture, in the very neighborhoods so lyrically and beautifully described by the Author. Every little detail of the areas, the culture, the time period was just a trip back home for me. The story was somewhat dark but compelling and so very true to so much of what one could/would experience in that time frame, in that area. I cant recall the last time I read an entire book from start to end without putting it down. It just drew me in from the very first sentence and kept my interest thru every single descriptive , but never over wordy chapter. I found the characters just so interesting and in very subtle ways multi dimensional. Was very stricken with Sarahs easy ability to try foods that her religious upbringing forbade. So much to be said for the Seppy character, and his transformation. And Eddie, what a life and what a great tour thru my beloved Brooklyn.I would love to see a prequel of this story to tell us more about Beth. I left Brooklyn 35 years ago, but till the day I die, Midwood, Sheepshead Bay, Brighton Beach, and Coney Island are forever my home. Thank you Mel Ostrow for a vivid and very fascinating book. I read this book on Saturday, and all day Sunday could NOT stop thinking about the story and the characters.
