Zoe Tamerlis Lund plays Thana, a mute seamstress who is raped on her way home from work. Then, after arriving at home in shock she is confronted by a burglar who rapes her again. Striking out in rage and terror Thana kills her attacker. After disposing of the corpse she keeps his gun and as her mental state deteriorates she uses it in a bloody killing spree on the men of the city.

Director Abel Ferrara started his film-making career with Driller killer, a film that took the low rent punk aesthetic of New yorks underground film scene, mixed it with the sleazy low rent charms of the 42nd street grindhouse and topped it off with an intelligent tale of a tortured artist going mad in an environment where his work is not appreciated. With Ms.45 he delivers a film that continues with the punk, exploitation style of Driller but instead crafts a tale of urban isolation and violence. Thana has no voice, an isolated lonely victim she becomes a hunter through necessity. While most revenge films of the time take a cathartic approach to violence, Ms.45 seems to view it as an act of total self destruction.

Sadly Alamo Drafthouses Blu-ray is locked region A. A real shame as the film has NEVER looked better. If this is the standard for their future releases they are a label to watch. While not overloaded with extras it has two short films with Zoe lund and some interviews as well as an excellently produced 32 page book with essays on the film. Anyone not in love with the sleeve art should also be made aware that it is reversible and has the original art on the reverse. Personally I like both options equally.

Overall, if you can play region A discs then this is one I highly recommend picking up. Drafthouse are releasing THE VISITOR, which is on its way to me as I type this and i'm definitely looking forward to it.

Beautiful HD re-master of Abel "Driller Killer" Ferrara's stunning New York set revenge drama.

Thana, a beautiful deaf seamstress from the big apple's garment district has the misfortune of being sexually assaulted twice in the same day. Once by a masked hood, (Ferrarra hiding behind his Jimmy Laine pseudonym) and then later by a housebreaker who upon realising the doe eyed mute can't tell anyone, decides to cut his losses on a poor haul. The assaults prey havoc on her mental health and she begins to see all men as the enemy, not that there are a lot of examples to the contrary in Ferrrara's sleazy New York.

Treading the finest of lines of any rape-revenge movie and driven by an incredible silent performance from Zoe Lund, (then Zoe Tramerlis) Ms. 45, retitled Angel of Vengeance in the UK remains a masterpiece of grindhouse themes stylishly executed in the arthouse mode.

A bloodily empowered Thana starts to comb the city for miscreants. But as the body count rises, the full blooded ardour of the audience wanes as the realisation sets in that this girl is really heading down the wrong path. By the time she meets a depressed drunk, (a startling turn from Jack Thibeau) who pours his heart out to her in front of the Hudson river, viewers will be starting to squirm and don't even go there with Phil the dog!

There's plenty of rotten big apple charm here with loads of quirky characters and the movie alternates between highly stylised sequences such as the Central Park shootout, to stolen verite looking shots on the mean streets. Death Wish is the obvious kick off point for this, however Ms. 45 is a much better movie than all the rest of it's exploitation peers.

Drafthouse's Blu-ray scores exceptionally well.

Armed with his 45 Magnum she embarks on bloody a one-woman crusade of vengeance against the Big Apple's male population.

THE PROS & CONS

1981's MS. 45 (aka ANGEL OF VENGEANCE) is one of the best vigilante movies made, hands down.
It is a grindhouse production and was made on a budget of only $62,000. It's also an exploitation film, so expect a focus on the ooey gooey good stuff - enough for the BBFC to impose almost 1:42 mins. of cuts for the 1984 theatrical and 1986 VHS release (there hasn't been a release in the UK ever since). Former US releases were cut by 1:22 mins. to obtain the R rating from the MPAA. This cut version was also released on the 2000 Image Entertainment DVD. Older US VHS and the German Warner Bros. VHS as well as this Blu-Ray version feature the fully uncut, unrated version of the film.
As long as you expect a grindhouse film and not 100 % realism, you won't be disappointed. Some of the gore effects look fake by today's standards (blood dripping on the newspapers clearly looking like red paint in an early scene) and Thana shooting the gun like a pro with an endless amount of ammunition might cause some eye rolling, but take it as what it is - a highly entertaining and satisfying revenge flick.
