Dorothy Parker is a fascinating woman, filled with dry and cutting wit. The film is a loose conglomeration of scenes telling parts of her life related to the infamous Vicious Circle of artists and critics in the 1920's. It's not your usual glossy biopic and rather tells a tragic tale of a woman whose intellect and emotional proclivities make her a leading satirist but a none too successful one, especially in love. Jennifer Jason Leigh does drawl out every line of the film and it does become wearing but at the end you will feel you really got to know the good and the bad times of this exceptional woman. Well worth watching.

What can I say? Jennifer Jason Leigh runs away with it. Before watching the film, I didn't know anything about Dorothy Parker, so watching when watching Leigh all I had to go on was her performance, and a fine performance it is. Her "Dorothy Voice" was rather annoying at the start but as the film developed it became rather nice to listen to! Quite soothing! Anyway, the film is nicely acted by all the cast and chugs along at a good pace. The b&w scenes of Parker reciting her poetry are welcome breaks in the story, but you do seem to think "What's the point?" But I liked those bits, who cares? As the film ended, I thought to myself "That's a pretty good film" but I really do not know why. Sometimes it's nice to enjoy a film without analysing the whole thing.

If not precisely a great film, it is a hugely entertaining one, thanks to the original material of Mrs Parker, who it has to be said was the shining light of ascerbic wit and unpalatable truths of her era

I struggled to find this film, so was delighted to find it on Amazon.
It wasn't very clear on purchase that it's a French import, but it really doesn't matter - just turn the subtitles off.
Dorothy Parker was a genius & Jason-Leigh is fabulous as her.
This is film is brilliant. Just brilliant.

Five stars for the film - but I got this for Christmas and I'm not sure if I've got the same one as everyone else because mine has Dutch subtitles that I can't seem to get rid of. My DVD player won't let me go to 'Menu' and I can't remove the subtitles. Maybe it's my player tho. Anyone else got this problem?
