All six episodes of the comedy series, devised by Caroline Aherne, Craig Cash, and Henry Normal, that follows 'Mrs Merton' out of her usual chat show environment and into her home. Looking after 37-year-old son Malcolm (Cash) and her bedridden husband (who's never seen), Mrs Merton (Aherne) dislikes change, preferring to live life in a 1950s-style timewarp.

So well written and performed. All the characters are funny and brilliantly performed. The Irish dancing is the funniest thing I.ve seen in long time. Craig Cash is a very clever man. Just loved Brian Murphy as Mr Capstick
The one drawback is the episode in which Caroline Aherne plays her Scottish twin sister. Who knows why, for a start, they didn't get another actress in? The accent is passable but the tired stereotypical references to shortbread, tartan, and the Loch Ness Monster are - well, tired. Maybe it is in keeping with the character, as established in the chat show, or is knowingly out-of-date in line with (for example) Malcolm's hobbies including the making of model aeroplanes and playing Snakes & Ladders. Maybe the big joke is the revelation that not even the Scot likes shortbread. Whatever the reason, this episode felt substandard as a result, as though it was written principally for Aherne to play opposite herself.
However, aside from that, this is a great and under-rated series which showcases some fine comedy talent.
This is great quirky British comedy writing at it's best. Its also unusual, dark, perceptive ,intelligent and arty. Its a real one off. One to keep. Highly recommended.

After the recent, tragic death of Caroline Aherne, I decided to give the BBC's 'Mrs Merton and Malcolm' another go, after feeling rather underwhelmed the first time I watched it. Read morePublished 1 month ago by Brit Boy
Unfortunately 1 star is the lowest choice available. This series is so inane and stupid it doesn't deserve a blip let alone a star. Read morePublished 2 months ago by Winky

A bit hit and miss. Nowhere near as good as Early Doors but then that's hardly surprising.Published 4 months ago by Patrick Smith
