Product Description

All six episodes of the comedy series, devised by Caroline Aherne, Craig Cash, and Henry Normal, that follows 'Mrs Merton' out of her usual chat show environment and into her home. Looking after 37-year-old son Malcolm (Cash) and her bedridden husband (who's never seen), Mrs Merton (Aherne) dislikes change, preferring to live life in a 1950s-style timewarp.

Wasn't a great success when it appeared in 1999, people thought it was a bit disturbing I think. Really great to see it again. If you like low key comic tragedy then it's a must! A great buy!

one of the most under rated series ever, brill writing and amazing acting by brian murphy that just makes me wanting more. why oh why did they only make one series, total madness to not make any more due to presure groups saying it took the micky out of less advantaged people with learning problems. the whole program was filled with great warmth and very very funny. any time i'm feeling low, this program is a great tonic. Hated the caroline aherde talk show format, loved her royle family but mrs merton and malcolm should not be missed, cash & aherne at their best. A must get !

It arrived early, always a nice surprise, well wrapped. Although not P.C nowadays, it's still an innocent hilarious reflection of the human dilemma. The comedic writing team of Aherne and Cash is sometimes so subtle it is moving. Tremendous enjoyment, so pleased to have a chance to view the series again in full.

Missed this series when it was aired. Have recently rewatched Early Doors and though I would give this a go. Brilliant!!
So well written and performed. All the characters are funny and brilliantly performed. The Irish dancing is the funniest thing I.ve seen in long time. Craig Cash is a very clever man. Just loved Brian Murphy as Mr Capstick

Its a great bit of british comedy from one one of the british greats Caroline Aherne. Theres no " canned " laughter or a studio audience in the background but I think it adds to the " drama" of it all . And just to add that I knew someone like Malcolm (Mrs Merton's Son) many years ago and the similarities are so similar that im sure Mrs Merton and I had a mutual friend that each of us were unaware of. Brilliant.

I remember this being on at the time, but only just bothered to watch the entire series. It's very good, it creates and sustains its own little world extremely well. The writing and acting talent is undeniable, and the (mostly) one-location and dialogue-based script is broadly comparable to The Royle Family. It raises plenty of smiles, rather than splitting your sides, but there is lots of humour and warmth to it and it has some nice touches.

The one drawback is the episode in which Caroline Aherne plays her Scottish twin sister. Who knows why, for a start, they didn't get another actress in? The accent is passable but the tired stereotypical references to shortbread, tartan, and the Loch Ness Monster are - well, tired. Maybe it is in keeping with the character, as established in the chat show, or is knowingly out-of-date in line with (for example) Malcolm's hobbies including the making of model aeroplanes and playing Snakes & Ladders. Maybe the big joke is the revelation that not even the Scot likes shortbread. Whatever the reason, this episode felt substandard as a result, as though it was written principally for Aherne to play opposite herself.

However, aside from that, this is a great and under-rated series which showcases some fine comedy talent.

A great DVD of a great underrated series. Its a pity it was panned at the time, so that plans for a second series were scrapped. Comedy often works well when elements of pathos are included and this is quite a sad series, apart from all the laughs: Mrs Merton only has 1 friend, Arthur Capstick, who is suffering from Alzheimers', her son is retarded and has no friends, and Mr Merton is a vegetable! Great performances, and i think its better than the `Royle Family'.

An absolutely unique series. Shame they only made 6 episodes, but it came under rather a lot of criticism. I cant; see why myself.

This is great quirky British comedy writing at it's best. Its also unusual, dark, perceptive ,intelligent and arty. Its a real one off. One to keep. Highly recommended.
