I made this 'by hand' (no machine, no intention of buying one) and used Doves Farm yeast with this mix - no issues getting it to rise properly (I set it on the cooker top while the oven was preheating, that may have made the difference?) and the aroma as it baked had us drooling. Love how truly easy it was to make and how nice it tastes. It does taste, toast, and slice like 'real' bread - great leftover Sunday Roast beef sandwiches with soup for lunch today with it and wow was it good!
I also tried Doves Farm bread flour this weekend - equally nice but different taste, more like sourdough for some reason. My husband likes that as well so both Mrs Crimble's and the Doves Farm will be staying on the Subscribe and Save. I'm so happy for my husband (the gluten intolerant in our house) because he loves bread and now he has two different types to enjoy.
UPDATE 12 July 2015. I've now had two bad batches of this bread that don't rise and when that happens, the resulting doughy bread is impossible to toast and tastes terrible. I have lost faith and cancelled my subscription. Rather sad as the alternatives are far too expensive to justify.
It gives a bouncy bread which I have missed since not being able to eat 'with gluten' bread
Gluten free bread is now nice again - thankyou Mrs Crimbles !
However despite stocking up on Doves Farm bread flour, my attempts at making gluten free bread resulted in heavy brick-type loaves that even when toasted were barely palatable. I dare say this had something to do with the various recipes I was experimenting with but I was pretty disappointed.
I thought I would try a bread mix and was impressed by the reviews for Mrs Crimble's.
However they did not prepare me for just how great this bread is. Light and bouncy and the nearest thing to 'proper' bread I have ever tasted; even better than pre-made Genius breads. Even my son (who usually avoids my gluten-free substitutes like the plague) absolutely loved it. Were it not so expensive compared to 'normal' bread, the whole family would be eating it!
I am coeliac and really miss bread. I have tried to make gluten free bread at home but I've really struggled... I have tried Doves Farm, I have tried my bread maker recipes, I have tried all sorts of varying flour mixes - and Mrs Crimble's has been the only thing to work in my 1.5lb bread maker. Makes a lovely soft and chewy loaf. Now ordered a ton more in bulk! Finally - delicious bread again!
