An award-winning classic children's novel in a new edition for a new generation
About the Author
Richard Atwater was a newspaper columnist and also taught Greek at the University of Chicago. He got the idea in 1932, after watching a documentary about Richard E.Byrd's Antarctic expedition but had had only completed the first part when he had a stroke and the book was completed by his wife Florence. They were jointly honoured with the Newbery Medal in 1939.

Short and sweet but there's a reason this classic children's book is still so popular 80 years on. Absolutely charming!
And if you have watched the movie the book is 100% better it is very interesting and very funny one of the best books I have read in my life.
So if your thinking of getting it please do because it is an amazing book.
Naturally, when Mr Popper's Penguins the film came out, I went to see it immediately, and loved it. What's not to love; Jim Carrey AND penguins?
I discovered the book accidentally, while browsing through the books on 12 Days of Kindle this Christmas, and although it was clearly a children's book, I figured I'd give it a go.
I really enjoyed it. Although it's very different from the film (I'm pretty sure all they took from the book was the name and the penguins), it was still awesome. Some bits were a bit boring, and the concept of the penguins somehow learning all those tricks and miraculously not pooping in the house is a little ridiculous, but it's a kids book after all, and I loved it nonetheless.
The only problem is that now I want to own 12 performing penguins that don't poop!

It's cute to read about Mr Popper, his long-suffering wife, their cherubic kids, and the titular yet troublesome penguins. But it's a bit short in depth.Published on 26 Feb. 2014 by MaMa Makes the Best Soup
