Henry Cavell realises he made a big mistake when he seduced Caroline. Or did she seduce him? Now he's married to a fashion-and-gossip-obsessed flirt, and the baby she said she was carrying is lost, along with his plans for a quiet family life by the sea.

Downstairs, gentle, kindhearted Jemima keeps Henry's house, and without knowing it wins his heart too. But she is just a servant, and he is married...

There is a host of other characters - including Ma and Pa, Mrs Smith, Mr Dennett, Maria, little Frances, and Sultan - but only the fortune teller knows what Mr Cavell's diamond has to do with any of it.

I honestly couldn't put this down. Would Caroline turn out to be a lady after all, or would Henry turn out to be the brute she said he was? And Jemima? Well would she, or wouldn't she?

This is a charming historical romance, which will leave you guessing until the very end!

A lovely historical romance that kept me gripped from the off. Henry becomes entangled with the ruthless, determined Caroline despite falling for the sweet, unassuming maid Jemima. How will it all resolve itself? Beautifully written this question kept me turning those pages. I couldn't put it down.
Based on the author's own family history made this an even more interesting read for me.
Kath never disappoints and I look forward very much to reading her new book The Daughters of Red HIll Hall out now.

A pacey tale of manipulative women and honest ones. The way the tale is structured, switching between different viewpoints, keeps the voice fresh, and the characters are absorbing in their own right. I loved the fact this story was actually based on real people, coming out of the author's research into her own family tree. It made the events all the more satisfying.

Ruthless Caroline is determined to find herself a husband above her station and Mr Henry Cavell fits the bill. But will the relationship survive her conniving ways? How upright maid Jemima depairs of her new mistress...

What a lovely read. A gentle story that is nevertheless compelling and I virtually read it in one sitting. Caroline makes a wonderful villainess and has the reader desperately hoping for her comeuppance! Henry is an appealing hero and child Frances and dog Sultan are adorable. Twists and turns keep the reader guessing right until the end, as to what the final outcome will be.

McGurl's historical style reads as authentic yet is easy-to-read and she has created characters the reader soon cares for. A sensual, romantic read!

I read Mr Cavell's Diamond in two sittings. It was very well written and easy to read with engaging characters, and made all the more enjoyable because the author based the book on her own ancestors true story of love overcoming adversity. I would definitely recommend this book.

Our heroine was rather too much of a doormat, not a diamond, for my liking. I just really didn't get her loyalty and devotion to someone who - to be frank - didn't deserve it.

The writing was okay, if a little on the dull side, and there were some anachronistic details which jarred - if I am to be taken into a make believe world, I need it to be real and consistent with my expectations.

This was great - gripped me from the first page because I always wanted to know what would happen next. The characters and surroundings were vividly believable - particularly with the heroine Jemima, I felt I was right there with her.
And the Author`s Note at the end is staggering and very moving.
