Downstairs, gentle, kindhearted Jemima keeps Henry's house, and without knowing it wins his heart too. But she is just a servant, and he is married...
There is a host of other characters - including Ma and Pa, Mrs Smith, Mr Dennett, Maria, little Frances, and Sultan - but only the fortune teller knows what Mr Cavell's diamond has to do with any of it.
I honestly couldn't put this down. Would Caroline turn out to be a lady after all, or would Henry turn out to be the brute she said he was? And Jemima? Well would she, or wouldn't she?
This is a charming historical romance, which will leave you guessing until the very end!
Based on the author's own family history made this an even more interesting read for me.
Kath never disappoints and I look forward very much to reading her new book The Daughters of Red HIll Hall out now.
What a lovely read. A gentle story that is nevertheless compelling and I virtually read it in one sitting. Caroline makes a wonderful villainess and has the reader desperately hoping for her comeuppance! Henry is an appealing hero and child Frances and dog Sultan are adorable. Twists and turns keep the reader guessing right until the end, as to what the final outcome will be.
McGurl's historical style reads as authentic yet is easy-to-read and she has created characters the reader soon cares for. A sensual, romantic read!
The writing was okay, if a little on the dull side, and there were some anachronistic details which jarred - if I am to be taken into a make believe world, I need it to be real and consistent with my expectations.
And the Author`s Note at the end is staggering and very moving.

I loved this story about Jemima and Henry's love for each other. As a keen genealogist myself, knowing that it was based on actual ancestors of Kath's made it even more poignant. Read morePublished 12 days ago by Angie from Brighton
This is a predictable romantic tale. Fine for reading on the beach but I did not find it engrossing or dramatic enough.Published 1 month ago by Amazon Customer
