The book brings home how close Britain was to being invaded, and the resolve of the whole nation to resist the invaders At one stage, Mr. Brown and his townsfolk formed a section of the Home Guard and found that their arsenal consisted of one 12-bore shotgun and seven cartridges!. I found that the diary captured the ebb and flow of the fortunes of the antagonists, from Britain being very much the underdogs to slowly gaining the upper hand. It was also interesting to read how the attitudes to Russia changed as the war progressed. I was a schoolboy during the war, away from potential bombing targets so our village hosted schoolchildren from Liverpool for the war years. Imagine today, parents having to pack a small suitcase with their kids' clothes and perhaps a favourite toy, then sending them away to live with strangers for an indeterminate time. Still, even that was better than the disruption faced by the present refugees in the Middle East today.

Came within a week. As described. The diary entries are quite boring though. It reads like a daily news bulletin and you do not get get the feeling of his character other than restrained and matter of fact.

Bought this book for my elderly mum and she loved it, we live in the same area where the book was set so it was extra interesting for us. This book has been passed round the family and we all found it a good read.
