I have to admit that whenever I am doing work round the house such a tidying, dusting, sorting out and so on that a good blast of great classical music dulls the tedium by arousing my interest. When I was having a clear out of my bedroom I had this on in the background one CD after another and the time just flew by.It is stirring, romantic stuff and as such is Mozart at his best. This is real high culture and for those who like to either be distracted from the boredom of housework or who like unwinding in a refined way after work then this is a great album to buy.Mozart's genius was always thought by me to be a given fact - this magnificent work confirms it.The orchestra do a first class job as do the many talented singers.I will not discuss the storyline of the piece as for those who know it better than me it would be inadequate and for those who do not know it well if at all it might ruin a few surprises. But I cannot praise this Album enough and strongly advise cultured people with an eye for a bargain to buy this from Amazon.CO.UK ASAP !

HASH(0x8e46c30c) out of 5 stars Cannot Go Wrong With This! 11 Aug. 2012

The main selling point of this set was of course, the price. A full 3CD boxed set of Figaro for around the $12 I paid is a no-brainer. There is no reason for this not to be a pricy set. Sir Charles Mackerras conducts the Scottish Chamber orchestra in a beautifully paced rendition of the score with some extras added from his studies. Figaro purists might note some ornamentation and tempo changes but they come as pleasant rather than disturbing surprises. Mackerras also has singers who are up to the task of this great work. Not quite the legendary performers of the Solti, Kleiber, or Guilini sets, but no slouches either. Most are veterans of the great opera houses and seasoned Mozart performers and they all sing well here.

If you need another Figaro (and who doesn't?) this one is rock solid.

HASH(0x8ecebec4) out of 5 stars An excellent performance - Also available as part of the budget "Great Operas" box set 21 April 2013
By Phil (not) in Mågnoliá - Published on Amazon.com
Although the price of this performance of The Marriage of Figaro is already very reasonable by itself here on Amazon, potential purchasers should also be aware that it is included with three other Mozart operas (Don Giovanni, Cosi Fan Tutte, and The Magic Flute) in a box set that is presently available for not much more than the cost of this single opera performance - a spectacular value --> Mozart - The Great Operas.

Performers include: Carol Vaness (Contessa Almaviva), Alessandro Corbelli (Cont Almaviva), Suzanne Murphy (Marcellina), Susanne Mentzer (Cherubino), Rebecca Evans (Barbarina), Alfonso Antoniozzi (Doctor Bartolo, Antonio), Nuccia Focile (Susanna), Alastair Miles (Figaro), Ryland Davies (Don Basilio, Don Curzio); Recorded 1994, performed in Italian.

The performance is delivered in three CD's, with appendices to all four acts included in CD3, providing alternative and additional numbers to the basic opera performance.

I've reviewed this opera along with the others under the above referenced box set. It is a very worthwhile performance, and even more worth purchasing when you can receive it along with three other operas for essentially the same price!

After just playing this recording, I simply want to add more voice here, actually an echo of the two reviews already posted (as of 10/1/12). This is top-notch Mozart -- you won't be disappointed.

HASH(0x8e3c093c) out of 5 stars Wonderful Figaro at even 4X the current price! 7 Feb. 2012

I simply can't believe the bargain price on this Mackerras reading of Mozart's Figaro. I paid $3.91 plus shipping $
handling $2.98. The tempos are just right and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra & Chorus are wonderful. I wanted a 2nd version of this masterpiece after my Bohm version - and I couldn't be happier! Get it!

HASH(0x8e638f30) out of 5 stars A first class performance at a bargain price. 17 Oct. 2013

A idiomatic performance of a much recorded opera offered at the special price. All of the artists are seasoned Mozart singers and the conducting is treasurable. A good second choice of this masterpiece.
