This is a work I love.I have owned and loved the Naxos recorrding for years and bought this one after a BBC Radio 3 recommendation. I'm not sure why the label needs "First Choice" branding, given the success and cool styling of "The Originals", but it's available and for that I'm grateful.Beautiful, grand music for any evening. Rarely solemn and always gorgeous. Barbara Bonney has a lovely bright tone which really works in this celebratory mass. Every day is better with Mozart and this has become a favourite!

The Coronation is the earliest of Mozart's three great sacred works for chorus and orchestra. The recording has great presence, and the chorus and orchestra bring plenty of weight to the proceedings as required, making it sound as if there is a much larger chorus (there are 10 sopranos and 8 singers to the other voice parts): the soloists are overly spot-lit and their forward placing detracts a little from the realism of the recording (I've heard many recordings where the balance between soloist and choir is much more exaggerated) . Barbara Bonney brings a delightful lightness and virtuosity to Exsultate Jubilate. Throughout Pinnock paces the music beautifully.

This CD was first issued in the mid-'90s' and at re-issue price is a bargain. This new re-issue in the First Choice series is supposed to offer a digital download of Mozart's 'little G minor' symphony, however I have been unable to download it.

The Coronation Mass is a masterpiece. It's so much more pungent than the later Missa Solemnis K 337 (Einstein was correct in his theory that Mozart wrote the latter to annoy the `Archbooby' - to wit, the drawn out `Amen' in the Gloria). The Exsultate Jubilate could be acclaimed likewise. The Vespers are second-drawer Mozart. Thankfully they have been well-served by discography.

I've had this CD in my collection since 1994. It has signally failed to worm its way into my affections. True, the 20-bit recording is spectacular (not least in the Credo of K 317). I suspect that Pinnock is playing at 430HZ as he does not sandpaper the ears unlike that Hogwood performance which has sunk into obscurity (the booklet is silent on this matter). Even so, for all the surface vivacity I fail to detect any sort of connection with the liturgy beyond a mere recitation of the text. Pinnock's Kyrie is actually slower than Karajan's analogue performance (Beethoven: Missa Solemnis / Mozart: Coronation Mass) and it lacks the `innerness' of the latter - and exactly the same charge could be levelled at its Benedictus and the Agnus Dei when compared with the stellar version by Levine (and Big Jim has the better soprano Mozart: Kronungsmesse Mass in C Major; Haydn: Missa in Tempore Belli). The Credo is a Gospel-in-miniature but one would be hard-pressed to make this connection on the basis of this performance: it sounds like another choral work.

Superb recording! Outstanding and first rate performances! Bonney's Jubilate is right up there with Schwarzkopf and Ameling! This is also a perfect Mozart combination!
