About the Artist

Mozart may have died heavy in debt, having encountered much fickleness on the part of the Viennese audiences and struggled to find suitable permanent employment for most of his career, but today his music is celebrated the world over;he is considered one of music history's greatest names, the vast majority of his works enjoying regular performances and being constantly reinterpreted by amateurs and top professionals alike.Stretching from his earliest years(Mozart started composing at the age of five) right through to his final days, this wonderful compendium traverses the full gamut of his output, covering the time spent in Salzburg working for his employer, the Archbishop Colloredo, the extensive travel he undertook during the 1760s and 1770s (which was in part to showcase his prodigious talents on the keyboard and violin, together with his talented sister Nannerl),and his later years in Vienna,to which he escaped in 1781 against his father's wishes to pursue a freelance career and where he married Constanze Weber the following year. What becomes evident from this set is that Mozart packed a phenomenal amount into his 35 years,a life that was often dominated by obsessive overwork, particularly towards the end. Moreover, there was not a genre akin to the period that he neglected nor did not achieve success in(in this collection the works are ordered as such, traversing orchestral music, chamber music, solo instrumental music, sacred music and vocal music),and in many cases he effected transformation, attaining new artistic levels this is particularly evident in the piano concertos that begin the compendium, remarkable for their diversity of character, and the concluding mature operas, works that achieved new depths of musical characterisation.A more varied, colourful output you could not find, one that is enhanced in this release by the multitude of talented performers assembled. At a bargain price, this 170 CD box set is not to be missed, affording hours of pleasurable listening that will satisfy both Mozart aficionado and novice.

For what I have listened to so far: Every symphony and the Horn Concerto's (aka 12 of the 170 discs..) plus a few selections from the rest..

This is a set that has been put together with some thought as, while singular works might not be of the very highest quality, they are all of at least a 'four star' level and the challenge is then to find the five star recordings by some stellar artistes of your favorite pieces.

At the time I purchased this set - a deal that meant each disc cost 45p or so.. This set is a deal that cannot be missed, I would have happily paid £170 if not more, just to have put this majorly complete works together must have been quite the challenge, to put in such a level of craftsmanship and playing is outstanding..
The only challenge remaining is to listen to all of it!

An absolute 5 star bargain. You will most likely find pieces you didn't know existed or were incorrectly ascribing to a different composer.

This is a seriously heavyweight boxed set of CDs. I was prompted to buy it by the Radio 3 "every noted he wrote" broadcasts, lasting for the whole of the first 13 days from a few years ago, which I remember with great affection. I listened to much music I had never heard previously, and which was often difficult to track down. This set overcomes that problem, and with a Black Friday price that set the 170 CDs at the trifling sum of 35p each, it was not to be missed. Like many people, I already have some celebrated versions of the more popular pieces, and in some cases I shall return to these from time to time. However, the general standard of the performances in this set are good, or very good, but the depth and range are unbeatable.

Fantastic value for money.I have a variety of Mozart recordings, nothing like complete, symphonies, quartets, piano concertos. But seeing this,at such a modest price, couldn't resist.Performances vary,as they must with such a huge project, garnered from a variety of sources, but nothing is less than good, and many are great. The Philips complete box was,as far as I'm aware, the only competitor, and that was very expensive, and now deleted.Even for the casual admirer, this is self recommending, far cheaper than, and of equal stature to, most individuals recordings or sets out there. You simply CANNOT go wrong.Earlier works, while not quite deserving of the term great, are nevertheless always pleasant, and the mature Mozart? Genius is such an overworked term, but applies in this instance.

I haven't listened to all these yet but I can say that they seem to be high quality recordings. These are professional musicians being recorded by professional recording technicians (which is more than you can say for Miles Davis etc). 43p per disc or there abouts. The set was purchased because doing so was cheaper than attempting to make similar music from MIDI files. If you have any understanding of the difficult nature of producing such music then you would realise the value here. Mozart is good for the brain.
