As a firm and long-standing JH fan I have to say that this album is a massive disappointment. Holland's musical skill and those of his band deserve more than simply being trundled out year after year as a backing band for a string of well-known names. Perhaps that would be just about acceptable if the tracks were good but they are merely average non-country - in fact, pretty well non-anything - tracks. Jools Holland is perhaps one of the nation's finest musicians and arrangers but he carries on hiding his light under a bushel of other people's singing. And then of course he insists on singing! Great pianist, great band leader, but very poor singer. Bring out an instrumental album Jools and give the band a chance to show its incredible talents and remember, Goodman, Miller et al did not need to sing to sell their albums.

When I asked for this and received it as a Christmas present, I expected it to be a lot more country- maybe next time I should check the singers rather than the front cover/title. This isn't country enough for me. Which isn't a bad thing- it's fine as music, just not good country.

Firstly let me state I am a fan of Jools Holland & the R & B Orchestra that's the reason I bought this c.d.

As someone else stated in another review I should have checked out the singers. If your idea of pleasure is to hear beautiful classic songs being butchered by so called singers (Lulu, Geldof e.t.c.) then this is for you otherwise steer clear of this self - indulgent nonsense and go for the originals instead.

I expected better of Mr Holland & his crew. 1 star for the fact that they can obviously play their instruments, be it without any soul or emotion on this hideous album.

Very interesting compilation of some country songs and other classics rearranged by Jules Holland and well known singers from all genres who provide the rendition. Have a look at the track list and performers but really need to hear samples of tracks to see if it is for you.

This is a great slant on the usual Jools Holland's Rhythm and Blues Orchestra offering. Whilst it may not appeal to all serious country fans I think that fans of Jools Holland and this series of albums will be delighted. There are some really good versions of some country standards.

Jools Holland may be better known as a presenter of TV music shows than as a musician, but music is his first love. Although he is primarily a rock music fan, his tastes have always been somewhat eclectic. Even in the days when I had television, I was never an avid watcher of his shows, but I saw enough of them to recognize that country music had a place in his musical interests. It therefore didn't come as any surprise to me when I discovered this album. I was never going to pay full price for it, but I eventually found it at a bargain price, at which point I snapped it up.

Rock and pop singers who dabble in country have a somewhat chequered history. Some of them just record country songs in their own style, as Ray Charles did with enormous success back in the sixties. Others make greater efforts to appeal to country fans, a prime example being Neil Young's album Old ways, recorded with Nashville musicians and guest vocalists Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. Although I love Neil's album, it wasn't the commercial success that Neil had hoped it would be. So what of this effort by Jools and his guests?

Jools (or the marketing people) certainly went overboard with the cover. Red sandstone cliffs and cacti fit the stereotype that some people like to associate with country music. Graft Stonehenge into this otherwise American landscape, to make clear that this is a British album, and you have the backdrop to the booklet cover, completed by a picture of Jools and the relevant credits (artist and album title). But are the contents as country as the booklet cover suggests? Perhaps not, but they're a lot nearer to traditional country than some of the music Nashville has to offer.

This album is nostalgic, moody and brilliant. Holland's touch with stars singing outside their normal genre works a treat to produce a memorable experience. Lulu and Bob Geldof are brilliant! Let's have more of the same.

What suprised me on this C.D. was the fact that I liked Tom Jones singing Friends not lovers. Well worth a listen if you are a Jools or country music fan. Worst track for me was Lulu singing ( if you can call it that )I can't stop loving you! Take a listen see what you think folks.
