I bought the book over a year ago and went straight to Martha Peterson's (the author's) website i..e. the [...] where I ordered all the DVDs. There are four, one is the basic one, ideal for starting with, then there is one specifically for the leg and hip joints and one for the neck and shoulders and another one for athletes (which Martha said isn't only for athletes as anyone can benefit from it). They have really helped me as had going to the website and the YouTube page.

There is a lot that can be learned from these DVDs and I really need all of them as there are so many muscles that are in need of 'awakening' and so many brilliant, simple to do and highly effective exercises on these DVDs. It is so much easier when you watch them being done and hear the instructions that go along with them and also learn how they are affecting your movement and the intelligence behind the movements. I really have developed a better body awareness. Martha also does one to one lessons over the internet which may interest some people, but I'm pretty happy working through these DVDs for now but have not ruled out using this facility in the future.

I also recommend Viniyoga: Yoga Therapy for the Upper Back Neck and Viniyoga: Yoga Therapy for the Low Back Sacrum with Gary Kraftsow which are both available on Amazon.

I recommend these two instructors to anyone with mobility problems who is fed up with spending large amounts regularly on a host of private practitioners who can only sort out your problems for a few days and 'recommend' you coming back every week indefinitely. For the cost of less than a couple of those sessions, I have been able to cope with these weekly sessions and saved a bundle of my much needed cash. I hope they work as well for all of you.

I nearly gave up playing soccer in my late 20s because of chronic lower back pain. Then, I discovered Somatics and since then I've been completely pain free. Pain is not even an issue anymore.

This book is a much needed modern update of the seminal Somatics 'bible' by Thomas Hanna. The pictures are clear and precise and Martha Peterson does a wonderful job explaining the science behind why this works.

She makes many acknowledgements to Thomas Hanna but in my opinion this book is as important as its inspiration, bringing Somatics into the 21st Century and providing a simple solution for people who have otherwise 'tried everything'.

That more people don't know about Somatics is a travesty.

Genuinely life-changing.

I found clips about this method on you tube, and liked the principals behind it. It would be more helpful if there was a video with the book to help you get it right. There are very few practitioners in the UK, and they are expensive.

This book has completely transformed my life. For 25 years I've suffered with extreme tension in my calf muscles and back, especially when standing, making me reluctant to go out, making shopping and socialising extremely difficult, becoming agoraphobic and very anxious. I first bought Martha's DVD and from the very first session, noticed an improvement with the tension reduced. I then bought this book, which is very well written and easy to follow, with excellent photos of the exercises and within weeks am feeling so much more relaxed and most of all able to WALK AND MOVE more easily. I now feel so relieved at finding a solution to my tension problem after all these years of suffering. I am aged 72 so its never too late to improve!

After doing a workshop with a Somatic educater I bought this book. It is a good introduction to somatic exercises but I also found that the download from Martha Petersons website was very good to work through in conjunction with the book. It saved having to refer to the book whilst doing the exercises. Both the book and download are an excellent investment being much cheaper than paying for various therapies. You need to do each exercise mindfully, slowly and regularly to achieve results. I have been practising yoga for many years but these exercises have given me muscle and pain release that I could not achieve with yoga.

I cannot recommend this enough - for anyone who has a body. In any kind of shape, even many with chronic illness or disability that has made you feel all exercise is beyond you.
Everything makes sense, and it works, if you put the time in to get to know your body, it works. For just about anyone, you can improve, whether that means being able to get out of bed more easily or competitive sport, this will bring you on. For those in biomechanical pain who have had enough, you can be in less/no pain. No massage therapist or physio, no matter how skilled, can do what you can do for yourself every day. Other Hanna Somatics/Feldenkrais books are available but this is such an accessible place to start, and the DVDs are worth the download too if you possibly can. Let Martha, firm but fair, reassuring and inspiring, guide you away from your unhelpful patterns and pain.
But only you live in your body and it is so empowering that ultimately it is your patience and persistence with yourself that leads to relief and progress.
I have MS, bilateral Morton's Foot, had Menieres, was a GP and I wish this was on the NHS - it would save so much suffering and money.For Morton's Foot/Menieres you need Amber/Clair Davies Trigger Point Workbook as well to understand some specifics. But I have every myofascial release roller and trigger point gizmo going - rarely use them now because as time goes on, this approach is clearly unravelling knotted fascia as part of the re learning.
