I bought this book before going on a mountaineering course in India . Simply everything is covered in this book in fantastic detail from the correct clothing, to building snow shelters and expedition planning. This should be your first and last purchase for anyone loooking for a book which encompasses the theory and practical aspects of mountaineering.

This is THE comprehensive text on mounting climbing both summer and winter. It does not cover all aspects in depth, but as a reference and an introduction to mountain climbing (as opposed to rock climbing at your local crag) it has few equals. If I would recommend only one book on allround climbing it would be this. This edition feels more up-to-date on modern techniques and equipment than the previous, even if there are only a few years between them. Drawbacks? Yes, it can feel a lot like hearing a middle grade school teacher when reading the chapters, the tone is very lecturing.

I bought this one as it puported to be a modern and comprehensive encyclopedia of mountaineering know how. It is exactly that. It is not small so is definately a reference but this should be thought of as the mountaineers text book.

It covers all sorts of aspects of mountaineering - snow holes, kit lists, geology and geography. Well illustrated and readible it is definately one you could dip into when in need of a bit of clarification or guidance. It shouldn't need replacing with time as some of these techniques are 'as old as the hills' ('scuse the pun) and only equipment will change significantly with time.

If you are an instructor or a student this will be equally valuable, I have a couple hundred books on climbing and mountaineering and would say this one is a significant cornerstone of the technical section and could be considered an all in one combination of a climbing book, an expedition book and a geographic book. It covers climbing systems, techniques, gear placements and kit in just the Rock Climbing section alone. It also covers navigation, planning, etiquette and a great deal more besides. It's difficult to fault it, some 'advanced' climbers may scoff at the simplicity of it in some places but it does cover from the very basics to the more advanced stuff so would be ideal for beginner as a guide or an expert as a reference. The only volume I have encountered that may compete with it is the Fyffe and Peter 'Handbook of Climbing' (BMC) which I seem to remember being equally impressed with.

There is no ground-breaking information contained within but it is in one handy, comprehensive book.

If you had just one book on mountaineering, this should be it.

Whether you're just getting into hiking, or you're a seven-summit veteran, this reference book will be dusted off again and again.

Study all the outdoor fundamentals you could ever hope to acquire in this heavily detailed and neatly illustrated manual. Learn how to lead a high alpine pitch, understand mountain geology, gain new tips on navigation or arrest a fall while tying yourself off with the correct knot.

First published in 1960 and now written by a team of more than 40 expert climbers, this 7th edition reflects the changes in equipment and technique across all climbing disciplines for today's enthusiasts.

Worthy of a flick through before any trip, this is the definitive guide for any mountain lover. No climber's bookshelf is complete without it.

Freedom 7 is the latest edition of this highly respected text. It is without doubt the premier mountaineering text available today. However readers searching for the most up to date information concerning all types of climbing should supplement this with a copy of "The Mountaineering Handbook" by Craig Connally, which is a perfect companion text. All in all highly reccomended.
