Genuinely inspiring and thought-provoking...draws on a wealth of personal leadership guidance from global leaders. --Director, October 2011

From the Back Cover

In July 2008, international business executive Herta von Stiegel led a group of disabled people to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for charity. The story was captured in the award-winning documentary The Mountain Within―and now the expedition has inspired this remarkable work, which blends the gripping tale with powerful leadership lessons and conversations with many of the world’s most influential business leaders:

  • Kay Unger
  • Sung-Joo Kim
  • Dr. Joachim Faber
  • Baroness Scotland of Asthal
  • Marsha Serlin
  • Dr. Karl (Charly) and Lisa Kleissner
  • Martha (Marty) Wikstrom
  • Sam Chisholm
  • Minister Mohamed Lotfi Mansour
  • Karin Forseke
  • President and Lt. General Seretse Khama Ian Khama
  • Christie Hefner
  • Abeyya Al-Qatami
  • Hon. Al Gore and David Blood
  • Dr. Mohamed “Mo” Ibrahim

Life may be full of obstacles, but it is the mountain within that most often needs to be conquered. No matter your challenges or where you are on your climb to the top, this unique work helps you become a resilient leader capable of guiding your team to achieve even the most challenging goal.

It was over two years ago when I read the book for the first time. I was so inspired by the pages and chapters as they developed that my career changed thereafter. From trying to be a manager of people I became a leader of world changers. I inspired a couple of disciples to start a company that would change the world and today we lead 8 people who are impacting 119 countries.

I have met Herta personally and I can tell you how amazing and true her life is. She actually lives out the words of this book! In fact, this is perhaps the most powerful aspect of the book - the author has a life experience to draw from. Every story is real and comes from great leaders.

I have since read the book again and always refer to various chapters when needed. Not only that, I cannot help mention it in the talks I give across the globe. It short, read it, climb the mountain inside you so you can change the world around you.

The subject of leadership seems to be `de rigeur' at the moment. I currently work for an organisation focussed on leadership for sustainable development. We are all crying out for effective leaders to steer us through these uncertain times we find ourselves in (the devastating potential threats of climate change and our unsustainable way of life, the aching gap between the haves and the have-nots, the flaws in capitalist societies and dictatorships alike). That said, leadership is not an elite concept - the process of life seems to require us constantly to negotiate our own peaks, precipices, summits and cliffs.
I was fortunate to read The Mountain Within in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro itself which seemed to transform the reading experience into a real immersion into the author's heart, mind and soul. It is a wonderfully easy, personal and resonant read, written by a woman who has achieved a great deal in her professional career but who has retained great humility in our own achievements and a perspective that is spot-on and disarmingly down-to-earth. She has crafted a simple and easily-digestable modern day leadership manual based upon three interwoven strands of narrative. Firstly she imparts lessons gained during her remarkable and challenging personal and professional life. Then she vividly takes you through her mid-life obsession with Mount Kilimanjaro which culminated in a truly inspirational charity expedition to the summit. These personal experiences, obstacles and reflections are beautifully and skilfully intersected with bite-sized, conversational nuggets of wisdom from an interesting variety of notable world leaders.
This book is rich with practical wisdom, courage, and inspiration. It is a wonderfully constructed series of lessons relevant not only to anyone seeking to enhance their leadership skills but also to everyone with a simple desire just to do and be 'better', whether a leader or a follower be!

Herta Von Stiegel's words show depth and experience. They create a buzzing aura for a carefully chosen and worthwhile purpose.

The easy-to-grasp concept of a mountain expedition forms the groundwork to life lessons in leadership and success.

My favorite aspect of the book is the problem-telling. The book goes back far enough to describe times of hardship in Communist Romania that put recent economic 'hard times' in perspective. There are realistic accounts of the failures and hurdles along the way to the Enham expedition to Tanzania. In life there are unexpected failures that in hindsight seem obvious. But she doesn't pretend to have expected all the problems that arose. Starting the storytelling not at the foot of the mountain but from the birth of the idea through the planning stages was a good call for 'The Mountain Within'.

One downside to the book was the actual wording. I found there were inconsistent use of slightly strange metaphors and common application of clichéd phrases. In terms of style and flow, at times, it lacked the hand of a professional writer. In my opinion the text should be spoken rather than written. And perhaps, in either format, we hear a bit too much about the incredible Husband Hans.

However there was something about the book that drew me in and kept me going to the end despite its disappointing execution. Of course the idea of a climbing book analogous to leadership and success is brilliant. The book's construction was also, obviously, thoroughly planned. The positive, determined attitude was motivating. The parallels, particularly at the end of the book, with the realms of finance and political industries show how the mountain teaches lessons that are apparent all around.

This book portrays experiences that come from personal and business life of the author and that mix makes it very interesting, the book is packed with inspiration and wisdom. It is not only written for business leaders more so for anyone who wants to better their life in any area, make better choices, stand up for themselves and accomplish achievements that one might have thought were impossible at first sight. The lead up to the idea and the actual expedition of the mountain climb is very compelling and I would have loved to hear more about the people involved and how the experience of that climb has manifested in other areas and changed those climbers lifes afterwards. To me the book is a call to take ownership and responsibility for ones own life and actions. Imbeded in that entire story with Hertas own insights and life lessons are interviews with other very successful leaders at particular topics to discuss those lessons and principles further - great stuff - great story! Inspiring!
