Previously my smart phones have been Samsung Galaxy, and Huawei, so using stock android has taken a little bit of getting used to, but so far I'm enamoured with this little baby. Full disclosure, my Samsung is a few years old now, but this one is such a massive improvement on it in every way.
Firstly the fingerprint sensor; absolutely excellent, it works every time without exception, my Samsung was the exact opposite. Although my Samsung had for the first 9 months been recognising my fingerprints anout 30 - 40% of the time, it started to fail after an update, so I could only get in using my password after that. This little darling has a 100% success rate so far!
The camera is also excellent in all lighting conditions, and again a marked improvement against my old galaxy.
The movie editing tool is also better in my opinion, however, that is me speaking as a self confessed rank amateur.
The larger 21:9 screen has been slated by some review websites as being unnecessary, however I must admit I like it, it is much better for watching movies (I'm not a gamer). If you are watching a tv show shot in 16:9 there will just be slim black lines either side which you won't even notice if you're concentrating on the show.
It is also an ideal ratio to use for the split screen facililty available on some of the apps, which I love, and which I wasn't sure I'd get, away from the Samsung brand (I knew it was available on some android, but I wasn't sure what.)
The camera to the side of the screen has also been criticised, personally I think it is less obtrusive being in the corner than bang in the centre, but I guess that's a matter of taste.
So as you will know from the description, this is an Android One phone, meaning that it has started off running on Android 9 and will be updated to at least Android 11, it will also receive security updates for the next 3 years.
It has a 128 gb memory but can support an sd card up to 512gb.
It also has dual sim, which is great for me as I live in a semi-rural hilly area so reception isn't great a lot of the time, so I'm effectively doubling my chances of getting reception, with 2 providers.
The phone was nice and easy to set up as I already used Android, however it shouldn't cause any problems for a beginner either. I have to admit my contacts didn't fully download from Google, so I'm having to update those manually too, which is a pain, but that may be Google's fault rather than the phone.
Battery life is good in my opinion, I have been playing with it a lot since I bought my new toy!
The sound is very good in my opinion, it's not the greatest, but then again, for me I think it's perfectly good for the price point, it certainly sounds better through the ear buds on some tracks, "Standing in the way of control" started to sound a little tinny about 1 minute in, but sounded fine when I used the Motorola brand earbuds provided with the phone.
Because I pre-ordered the phone in May, I was eligible for the promotion of free Motorola Verve 500 true wireless earbuds, and they had absolutely no problems pairing at all, and again the sound quality was great.
As well as the wired ear buds, the Motorola came with a clear silicone back (which I removed as I had already purchased a full case for it) and a tool to remove the sim/sd tray.
Screenshots are easy to take, by just touching 3 fingers to the screen, you can also use a karate chop movement (twice) to turn on a bright torch (keeping the phone perpendicular, not angling it like an oar,) and the camera can be turned on with 2 quick flicks of the wrist, if you've more than one camera app you will get a choice.
Charge is pretty fast, although it is quicker in the earlier phase of the charge.
This phone does have NFC if you should require it for Google pay etc.
A really great idea is the app timers, so you can set a maximum time you can spend each day on an app, which I will find very useful.
The only thing I found vexing was for the first day and a half I had the phone, there was only a home button, nothing else. I was so confused, I didn't think this was a stock android issue. Then after a day and a half and lots of me "playing," the back button and recent button appeared! Oh well, it all worked out in the end.
Update: having played with the phones camera a bit more I have to say the detail close up is truly excellent. I took some distance photos of the hill near me which I believe is a distance of about 1.8 miles, using the zoom function. The pictures aren't superb, however it is a long distance, so I think it's holding its own (I did brighten these photos I think.) I've also included a couple I took using the "Live Filters."
*Extra note for Amazon customer asking about the free earbuds; to claim the Verve 500 earbuds you had to go to www.motorola.co.uk and follow the link which took you to a separate page where you needed to enter your name, address, the imei No. of the phone, the retailer and the date on which you ore-ordered the phone, as it was only pre-orders which were eligible. Motorola have currently taken the link down and I'm not sure if they will be getting more in, as it stated "while stocks last." I had entered my details on the 1st June and received the earbuds a few days later by DPD.
Having previously had a Motorola and Huawei phone, the return to Motorola with the Vision One was very welcome. Some elements from Huawei I do miss, like the ability to turn my phone entirely off and an Alarm to wake the phone and me for early morning starts, but that's about my only nag.
With a very good battery life that can last 1.5 days on a single charge, for me who's a person regularly using it playing games, listening to music and checking social media/messages, the Motorola Vision One lasts a very long time.
Fingerprint scanner is very helpful and hard to miss as it always seems to get my finger first time. Sound is just so crisp and amazing with Dolby Smart Sound built in so even the quietest of sounds are loud and clear. Turbo Charging makes quick work of short amounts of time 15 minutes accounting for around 25% battery-life increase and around 20% when using it. A nice unique feature going for the phone, which may annoy some but can be turned off, means that only slightly knocking the phone can semi-wake the screen and show any notifications to save battery life and time, though a miniature LED light is sorely missed too.
Overall a wonderful phone that looks, feels and acts like a high-end, high-priced feature. Looks smart and nice long screen to enjoy videos, films, games and social media surfing. Really do recommend against other competitors on the market.
The Vision One is good value, there is a lot of resources in the phone for the money that you pay; even if paying full price. I use mobile phone most as a phone, music player, and a kindle replacement; although I also use it as a camera and for travelling, train times, airline tickets, etc. Don't tend to watch videos much or play games on mobile.
With 128gb there is plenty of storage space on the phone. It has a bare bones version of Android installed that has little bloatware and what is there can be uninstalled. Other mobiles take up the storage with bloatware. Not this phone. Which is really good. It can take a large 512gb SD card, which are getting cheaper, so storage shouldn't be a problem. It's nice being able to carry a huge number of CD quality albums.
Volume on the phone is reasonable, the speaker is OK, and there was ample volume of the headphones. To go louder would be a bit risky for ears. Reviews suggest it's not the loudest. That might be true but it's not quiet phone.
It's fast enough. 8 CPU, 4 high power and 4 low power. There is no way to determine what applications runs on what cpu. There is 4gb of memory, that is plenty. The phone is reasonably future proof with these resources; depending on what you do with it.
It's screen is quite long and narrow, compared to the note 4, but it's easy to read the books off kindle. For PDF's in horizontal there's not a great deal of text on screen but it's OK to read, nice and clear. It's adequate for the time you might spend reading on the go. It's a good responsive screen and bright enough. However...
The camera notch is massive and it's in the top right of the screen.
It's something that I thought would be annoying; but it's actually... well... when running apps in full screen the app top doesn't go beyond a certain point so the notch can't be seen (my background is black to hide it). Since I have used the phone the camera notch hasn't been a problem; except on the only YouTube video I played and stretched to full screen. You see it then. I can imagine it would be annoying for some. I thought it would be annoying and it's lucky that it doesn't affect the reading aspect of the screen.
Tell you what it does do though... it reminds you there is a camera in your face.
The other problem is the battery. After a full charge I read kindle for 18 minutes and it was down 3%. That felt bad. The note 4 battery wouldn't have dipped like that. I'm not sure because it's a feeling only lets say 5% every 20 minutes of Kindle reading, that approx. 6 hours. Not that great for just reading. There is a power save mode that prevents apps from synchronising notifications. It's weird because the battery has plenty of juice. The battery is adaptive so perhaps it will learn to be better.
For £200 it was a bargain. Full price it's still pretty good for the resources on it. The camera notch is a red herring; I don't notice it. Time will tell with the battery.
The feeling about the screen and battery makes me think this phone isn't good enough for a kid. The kid won't mind the camera notch on the video but playing videos all day with that battery means it's not going to last a day. It's just a feeling; I might post back later with an update.
[edit: An update on the battery. The battery is reasonable. Streaming music over Bluetooth lasted well over a day, with some reading. It all depends, if your using this phone like a mobile computer then battery won't do. If this phone is primarily a phone, a Walkman during the day, maybe with a bit of reading during a commute, then the battery will be fine. It does charge fast with the supplied charger.
With the phones loundness it's plenty loud. With wireless headphones it's sweet.]
Conclusion, it's pretty good if you don't want to pay a fortune for something that's mostly just for simple applications, such as phone, messaging, music, casual photos, reading, travel.
