Product description

Product Description

The debut double album by The Dublin Drag Orchestra presents elegant, moving and virtuosic interpretations of rarely performed early English baroque music celebrating the human heart along with a musical tribute to the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

Motion of the Heart features a selection of rarely performed airs, duets, choruses and instrumental music from 17th century England by the great composers of the early English Baroque including Dowland, Lawes and Ward. The album celebrates and glorifies the human heart and the pain and pleasures of love. Music by: John Dowland, William Lawes, Henry Lawes, John Ward, John Coperario, Hank Williams Sr. and the Irish traditional lament, Donal Og.

Viva Frida! is a musical tribute to the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The album features duets, trios and instrumental music from 17th century Mexico and includes the haunting and beautiful song La Vida Callada (The Unspoken Life) with music by Clara Sanabras and lyrics by Frida Kahlo. Music by: Antonio de Salazar, Gaspar Fernandes & Sebastián Durón and featuring the song La Vida Callada by Clara Sanabras & Frida Kahlo.

"It takes chutzpah to programme Hank Williams alongside William Lawes." The Independent

"Musical standards are high, their programming ingenious and their photos are terrific." The Metro (London)

"The musicians on this recording are truly stunning. They produce a fascinating world of beautiful colours and sounds, and their musical creativity, passion and soul reaches out and touches the listener in a way that few can. For its expressive interpretations, interesting cover design work, and stunning musicians, this is my CD recommendation of the year." Musica Antiqua, UK Quarterly Early Music Magazine

"A jaw-dropping reinvention of Hank Williams's Cold, Cold Heart, which made me cry on first hearing it, the harmonies invoking Sixties California as much as 17th-century England." The Arts Desk (UK)

"A really great double album! Elegant and lively, the interpretations have charisma and character - Irresistible – 20 out of 20 Points!" Musikansich.DE (Germany)

' ll be won over by the first seven tracks; songs and instrumental pieces by 17th-century English composers, brilliantly performed. Pieces for viol consort by William Lawes accompany vocal works by John Dowland and John Ward; the latter's Hope of my Heart is exquisite here. The restraint, the emotional coolness of the music is skilfully projected; we re in a world of muted colours and repressed emotions. Then the Dublin Drag Orchestra suddenly lurch off in two surprising directions; the Irish folksong "Dónal Óg" soars above a subdued viol backing. And emotionally it's not such a huge leap to one of the 20th century's bleakest songwriters in a jaw-dropping reinvention of Hank Williams's Cold, Cold Heart, which made me cry on first hearing it, the harmonies invoking Sixties California as much as 17th-century England.' --
