Oscar's mother, as the young poet "Seperanza", electrified Ireland with her anti-English tirades in verse and prose. She was the linchpin of the Wilde family through its dramas, comedies and tragedies. This biography brings out her closeness to Oscar and his obvious affection for her.

Melville redresses the balance here, and gives the reader a little insight into an extraordinary woman - equally as non-conformist as her son; and with a flowing prose that is pure pleasure to read. An absolute must for Wilde fans everywhere - for to understand Oscar fully, one must look to the bohemian mother he worshipped.
