"Mother" is the opening track on John Lennon's debut post-Beatles studio album, "Plastic Ono Band". The album was released in December 1970, having been recorded late September and throughout October of that year (at Abbey Road Studios and Ascot Sound Studios). The album wasn't the first piece of Lennon's 'solo' work, as he'd recorded a number of experimental albums and a live album, as well as several singles, as non-Beatles projects. But "Plastic Ono Band" represents his first major studio LP as a solo artist.

It's a rather stark album, characterised by raw emotion and artistic honesty - and is considered one of Lennon's finest. "Mother" is one of the most important songs on the album, as it immediately informs the listener of the singer-songwriter's intentions: to be brutally forthright and articulate when it comes to his feelings, especially when it comes to childhood trauma. Lennon had only recently undergone therapy - and in consequence he injected his music with frank self-revelation. Of course, much of Lennon's earlier material had an autobiopic character (e.g. "Julia" and "Yer Blues" from the 1968 "White Album), but never to such as extent as here.

"Mother" is magnificently poignant, and an expression of artistic genius through feelings of loss, rage and pain. It is a career-defining song, with Lennon commenting on his abandonment - and as he repeatedly screams the lines "Mama don't go, daddy come home" as the song fades out, the listener cannot but be affected by this outpouring of emotion.
