A very clear and straightforward way to get to grips with the basics of Vietnamese.
Demystifies what appears to be a complicated language, but turns out is quite manageable.
Very easy to follow, but sometimes he forgets the phonetic translation, so a lot of looking back to remind yourself of the pronunciation.
Would recommend this to all beginners/travellers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing! 15 Mar. 2013

I spent two weeks in Vietnam visiting my in-laws. After the first few days there, I realized I needed some type of phrasebook. With only my kindle available, I found this book.

It contained useful phrases without overwhelming you. But most importantly, this was by far the most accurate with its pronunciations. I tried some of the other phrasebooks on amazon and their pronunciation guides, but no one knew what the heck I was trying to say.

I even asked my father-in-law (Vietnamese) what he thought of the translations, and he thought they were spot on.

You cannot beat the price for such a powerful phrasebook. Keep in mind, it is a "basic" Vietnamese book, as the title clearly states. But with the basics it provides, it has everything you need to understand, pronounce and speak basic Vietnamese during your travels. Cons: It doesn't have a dictionary. But unless you are trying to completely learn the language, you don't need it.

I recommend this to any traveler visiting Vietnam.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent resource for beginners 14 Aug. 2014

An excellent resource for the price. When starting on a new language it is important to understand how to properly pronounce the words. The author dies a great job of explaining the differences between the English alphabet and the Vietnamese alphabet.
I was unable to download the audio files, so I contacted the author. I was amazed when he immediately responded and helped to resolve my problem. I am now checking out his other books.

You can find far better instructions online in a few minutes by searching. This is really a waste of money.

2.0 out of 5 stars This was not useful for me 26 Feb. 2013

As someone who teaches a foreign language I found this to be arranged in a less than sensible manner and it did not fit my need for a phrase book for travel. I would not recommend this as either a primer, nor a phrase book.
