Morlach Rare Old is produced at the first legal distillery from Speyside's spiritual heartland of Dufftown, founded in 1823. Mortlach has been described by whisky connoisseurs as "The Beast of Dufftown" for its rich, complex, powerful and flavoursome character. A personality notably shaped by an unusual distillation system and excellence in casks selection. Three different distillation processes are running in parallel at Mortlach. Some of the new make spirit will have gone through more than 2 distillations and some of it more than three. Commentators have attempted to explain this astonishingly complicated and unique method as '2.81 Distilled'.

Can't say I'm impressed. I took a chance on this because of the 5 star reviews. Sadly, I've been disappointed.
It is a funny one to describe. It's got the initial intensity of a peaty whisky but with some honey caramel notes, so showed some promise, but it doesn't develop from there and just burns harshly at the back of the throat. The after taste reminds me of a Jura 10 year old, so not that refined for something they are charging the equivalent of 70 notes for. Competition includes most 18 year olds, and the ones I have beat it easily.
