Having read some of the other reviews, I thought I'd have a go myself.
I'm a coffee fiend. Love the stuff and totally refuse to drink instant so was looking for a machine, reasonably priced, with a pump action that produced good coffee and lovely frothy milk. I'd been looking around for ages and was shocked at the prices of some pump action machines. I came across the MR Roma and decided to give it a go.
It has been brilliant. Albeit as some have said that there are a few niggles, in general the machine performs well. It has been used several times a day since being purchased in November 03.
Unfortunately, 13 months after purchase the pump stopped. Panic ensued but when I checked the guarantee I discovered that it was covered for two years. I immediately rang the MR customer service department. I found them extremely helpful. We tried to diagnose the problem and find a remedy but couldn't. To my amazement, they immediately offered a replacement machine and that it would be delivered within 2-3 days and my old machine collected. I was most impressed with the service. I found MR customer service to be excellent. The new machine duly arrived and has been in use regularly since without a problem.
My niggles:
1. The drip tray needs emptying regularly and the indicator that it is full never seems to pop up.
2. The nozzle for frothing gets clogged despite being wiped and run off after every use. But, my remedy is: white vinegar on cotton wool wrapped around the nozzle then covered with a bit of cling film and leave for an hour or so. When removed, and all the gung comes away and is as good as new.
3. The coffee filter does drip but in my case not much. As soon as the coffee has gone through, I remove the filter and leave it on the drip tray. This seems to work.

OK so let's start with minor niggles and then bask in the wonders of this machine. This stainless steel pump action espresso maker is secretly a rebadged Taiwanese product - what do they know about coffee you might wonder? Its heavy base coffee drip trap does get discoloured inside. Apart from these niggles, the machine is generally superb. I've punished mine for nearly 2 years during which it needed a new gasket through heavy use.
Friends come round to enjoy good coffee (I'd recommend Sainsbury's Lombardy style @ £1.69)which you can ground powder fine for this machine. It does everything similar models might attempt to do with aplomb. It is extraordinarily tough and more robust than might be thoughht possible at anywhere near the price. It is almost faultless, although the filter holders are smaller than barista size and the pump is so strong that you have to tamper well to strain the greens in less than breakneck speed (no fault really, since many of its competitors simply wimper and groan with the strain.
Milk frothing is efficient although not super fast and the water tank is well designed but could perhaps be slightly wider at the top to facilitate easy filling.
It would be extremely difficult to generate such remarkably fine coffee with wonderful crema at anywhere near this price. Looks more expensive than its price - lots of sparkling stainless steel cladding and hardly any vulnerable ABS. Highly recommended at the price and has a 2 year warranty too.

I've had my Roma for nearly three years now and it has been utterly dependable.

It is the only espresso machine I've owned, but as an espresso nut and regular visitor to Italy I have to say that this little machine does an amazing job of replicating the real thing.

Of course it isn't perfect; as other reviewers have pointed out, the frother can clog, and the drip tray will discolour if coffee grounds and water are left in it.

However, provided it is allowed to warm up (I stumble downstairs to switch it on first thing every morning) the quality of the espresso is superb, with a lovely crema.

To avoid disappointment though, it is essential to ensure that the beans are finely ground - you will never produce good espresso from normal "to suit all coffee makers" ground coffee.

I have been brewing my own espresso's for about 5 years with a Krups machine that finally gave up the ghost last month.

I have been looking around for a more stylish machine (with plenty of chrome/steel) at a good price ever since.

I found this coffee machine on amazon and have been using it for about 2 weeks.

It looks great and appears to be well put together. As long as you allow the machine to heat up properly you get a good quality crema and the frother is easy to use.

I did have an issue with water leaking out the side of the coffee holder on the first couple of uses but this seems to have stopped now so it could well have been user error.

It does take a while to heat up the milk using the frother but 30secs in the microwave first speeds up the process no end.

in conclusion a good machine at a good price. Just make sure you buy decent quality coffee - even the best machines can't make a good quality coffee out of poor quality beans.

It took me a while to really get the best out of this machine, until I discovered that pump priming is the secret. Both the steamer and the espresso maker work best after they have been run for a few seconds. The steamer seems to hide water in its pipes that needs ejecting before you can put the nozzle into the milk. For the espresso maker, I put a cup under it to catch the hot water as I operate the pump and wait for a slight change in the tone of the pumping that is the signal that it is ready and primed. Only then do I attach the porta filter of coffee to make a perfect espresso. Now that I have it turning out proper cappuccinos, with the fabulous styling and extraordinary price this machine wins an easy five stars.
