After reading the previous novel ‘Ice and a slice’ I was inspired to go to an AA meeting. Alcohol has cost me my teaching career, driving licence, home, friends, health and worst of all, my dignity. Today I am 181 days sober, soon (God willing) to celebrate six months of sobriety. I believe the first novel got me to that first meeting.
The morning after the life before is even better, which I did not think possible. The book is so honestly written the characters coming to life with exquisite emotion. Dealing with the subject of child sexual abuse is not always easy to get right, yet Della has shown the aftermath amazingly. Putting the book down was hard, but I kept making myself as a part of me did not want it to end.
So many people are plagued with alcoholism, most suffering in silence and hurting those who love them, this novel shows there is another way if one is willing to work for it. There is a programme (if a little outdated with its language) across the globe welcoming anyone with a desire to stop drinking. AA has saved my life. Della’s novels got me to AA, therefore saved my life. Thank you doesn’t seem to cover it.
Della, I hope you are writing a trilogy as I want to celebrate ten years sobriety with SJ (or even see her survive a relapse?).
This is one of the best, most honest, real to life novels I’ve ever read, I cannot recommend it highly enough. I laughed out loud plenty and cried sad and happy tears. I’ll take some of the wisdom with me and pass it to others.
I was a third of the way through ‘A casual vacancy’ when my daughter returned my Kindle and I started ‘The morning after . . .’, so in my humble opinion Della’s book is better (sorry JK).
Emotion provoking masterpiece.
I don't think I can get across to you how amazing this book is. Rarely have I empathised with a heroine so much, (even though I rarely drink). SJ is simply just one of the nicest people, without being in the slightest 'goody goody'. She has absolutely no idea whatsoever what a fabulous person she is.
I am very much hoping that Della Galton will write a third story - there are more things which are going to happen to her which I would like to know about.
For anyone who has read Della in the past, you will know how well she writes - for those of you who haven't read her yet, all I can say is, DO READ THIS BOOK. For your own sake. The few hours it took me to read rank among the best few hours of a long life.
This series is proof that a fictional character can have a soul. If you like to read a book that you can immerse yourself in and believe, I recommend it.
An entertaining read for anyone but, If you have, Or have had your own problems with addiction, then this may do even more for you as an inspirational piece of writing. For me this was this was everything a book should be but it was also something I was not expecting, It really is something special that I will treasure, share and recommend to others who I think might really benefit from it, and those who just want to
read a damn good novel.
Inspiring, A joy to read and I believe that the writer must have poured so much of there own heart and soul into this book, because you can hear the main character breathing with each turn of the page, Not bad.
There's only one thing that these two books lack, and that's A third one.
