This Scottish quartet came to the attention of the British public in the mid-1970's with their brand of catchy, Beatles-inflected pop - all jangly guitars, handclaps, harmonies and melodies you couldn't get out of your head. Everyone knows "Magic", an enduring classic pop tune still heard today on adverts and "Classic Gold" style radio stations. When "January" hit Number 1 in 1975, it seemed that Pilot would really last the course. Sadly, this proved not to be the case. The problem appeared to stem from the fact that they became labelled as a band for teeny-boppers, a notoriously fickle market.
In 1976 the band, by now a three-piece following the departure of keyboardist Billy Lyall) decamped to Morin Heights Studios in Canada with producer Roy Thomas Baker, whose CV included recent successes with Queen. The resulting album, named after the recording location, represented a conscious attempt to steer the band away from the cul-de-sac in which it found itself. Their intent is spelt out, not only in the droll reference to "no handclaps" on the original vinyl sleeve but also on each of the 11 tracks which make up the album. The immediate difference is in the production: apparently it cost a fortune to record and it shows. It is as dense as you will find anywhere and yet it never sounds cluttered or lacks clarity. The harmonies are still present but they are multi-layered in a manner which (perhaps not surprisingly) is slightly reminiscent of Queen. However, in spite of the fact that keyboards are more prominent than on the previous two albums, the album's real crowning glory is the guitar playing of Ian Bairnson (who, along with Pilot leader/bassist David Paton, would later appear in the Alan Parsons Project).

HASH(0x91ff6b4c) out of 5 stars Overlooked Great Album from the 70's 24 Sept. 2011
By Ronald Kirk House - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Pilot is perhaps best known for the single "Magic" (not on this album) and for being the distinctive sound of the Alan Parsons Project. However, this overlooked album from 1976 is a really great musical achievement. Every song is a gem. Pilot has never sounded better, and the production work from Roy Thomas Baker is second to none. Highly recommended.

HASH(0x920e17c8) out of 5 stars A true classic recording in every sense of the word. 25 Mar. 1999
By Mark Esposito - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Brilliant production that is clean yet strong, teamed with classic pop song writing that comes together in one of the few truley classic 1970's albums. Every track is a refreshing part of the whole. A must listen from start to finish. An experience that doesn't come along that often in rock music these days.

HASH(0x93049d40) out of 5 stars In your face melodies! 14 Aug. 1999

This is definitely one of my Desert-Island-Disks. A must for anyone who enjoys great harmonies and pure melody. Remember music lovers, David Paton and Ian Bairnson of Pilot have been ( and Ian still is!) the core of the creative genius behind the Alan Parsons Project. Morin Heights is Pilot's Abbey Road!

HASH(0x920ff1ec) out of 5 stars Their BEST album...POWER POP super find! 18 April 2014

This album is leaning more to the rock edge than the 2 previous albums. Production is great thanks to Roy Thomas Baker who might have picked up some Queen sounds from this band. Great songwriting - even though lyrics are cheezy quite often, but that is part of the dazzle of this band. Canada has crazy lyrics, and reflect such a more clean and pure thought generation, but it is so catchy/hooky - I can not stop singing it.
This is a great disc for those in search of fantastic POWER POP that really does not exist anymore. Jellyfish definitely were fans of these guys and you can easily hear many of the subtle stylings they had.
Recommended HIGHLY!!
