Amazon.co.uk Review
Time does odd things to some films. In 1966, Morgan--A Suitable Case for Treatment was hailed as a touching black comedy about the destruction of a free spirit by an uncaring bourgeois world. Playwright David Mercer's screenplay is full of his standard obsessions of the time--Trotskyism and RD Laing's perception of the mad as truly sane--and Karel Reisz's direction effectively balances Morgan's failing real-world life with a fantasy life of gorillas, King Kong and sinister partisans emerging from a crisply photographed Battersea Power Station.
David Warner's Morgan is far more like his student rebel Hamlet of the same year than the B-Movie villains for which he has been more famous for ever since; it is a sentimentalised performance, but only because of the deep sentimentality of the film. A cast that includes Robert Stephens, Irene Handl and Bernard Bresslaw give us some effective social satire and low comedy. The trouble is that Morgan's pursuit and near-rape of his ex-wife, and his trashing of her society wedding, now look more like the behaviour of a stalker than an act of bohemian rebellion; it is significant that the film treats Vanessa Redgrave as a treacherous bimbo with nothing much to do except smile wistfully. Morgan may have been one of the trendiest films of its Swinging London epoch but it has not aged well.
On the DVD: the DVD is presented with Dolby Digital sound that makes the most of John Danworth's jazz score in a 2:1 full frame visual aspect. The clean print makes the most of the mono photography. --Roz Kaveney

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 May 2017This is a period piece, clearly swimming in mid-60's pop culture, even down to Lesteresque fast-camera slapstick episodes. There is a deeply dysfunctional protagonist who seems today less of a rebel than a borderline psychotic, and his on-again-off-again girlfriend/wife who seems to be less of an active agent than a passive girl-child. Yet on the whole, it weathers surprisingly well -- the story of a man who is, after all, a Marxist goriila, and that is not misspelled! There is real tenderness here, and great chemistry, with a superb cast, and a lot of funny stuff,in a very London English dry-humor way. This would make a superb double bill with "A Hard Day's Night". Redgrave is stunning, (Oscar nod here) even if her character lacks spine, as she renders such a person quite believable, at least at first glance. This is David Warner's first film, and a fine performance, both of them nuanced way beyond the silliness.Watch for Irene Handl's masterclass performance as Morgan's mom. She damn near steals the film. (Sometimes listed as "Morgan!", with the exclamation point included.)

This wonderful breath of fresh air film with sparkling black and white photography has to be one of the worst transfers to DVD I have ever seen. Scratches and over modulation of video gain make this DVD unwatchable, its certainly not the print they show on TV.
Irene Handl and cripes even Arthur Mullard have never been better but it is David Warner and David Mercer's film. It may not have aged well but it is worth seeking out. If you like this check out Peter Sykes's The Committee for more RD Laing inspired filmmaking. If nothing else these films give you an insight into what concerned some people at the time.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 February 2011This is one of those rare films to be enjoyed for itself, *without* cramming it into a defined category - and then complaining, because it doesn't fit.
While very much of its time, Morgan definitely repays viewing today... just keep an open mind, and, if you insist on categorising film, allow it to create its own category!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 July 2007Far too clever for its own good, this was a film very keen to follow that new wave of brilliant British films with their trade mark quirkiness and camera trickery. Best examples are probably 'The Knack' and 'A Hard Day's Night'. But this one made the huge mistake of taking quite weighty material for the lighter than air directorial treatment. It was never to work, and the result is a completetely odd, almost bizarre film.
Sudden scene changes, speeding up and slowing down of film and that tedious interposing of film clips I think did more to bring an end to the avant garde fad than to heighten it, as here it was all too jangled, too discordant and a little too sign-posted as well. In 1966, this was going to have to be a lot slicker in its handling than it was, for an audience already adjusted to the style.
For social and geographical history purposes only, it does offer something now, as its location shots in a half swinging, half dead, and crumbling London reveal much more than most films of the same period. Also, Warner showed here why he was much preferred by studios as a supporting, or character actor. He had something, but it definitely wasn't film star appeal. That lack of star quality certainly wasn't going to help the film.
Too interesting in the background detail to be a complete failure, this is best described I think, as a minor avant garde brit-flick, and a very flawed film (although the idea was quite brave). Compare this to the same year's release with another non star in the lead role, (the brilliant 'Blow Up') with some almost as annoying (the miming students) avant garde elements, but handled with a sureness of touch in direction and camera work, and you will see how much 'Morgan..' missed the mark.

Sometimes fast-paced, madcap fun, with wonderful acting. The film only sometimes seems dated. The background musical score is, in fact, tiresome. Recalls much of what was innocent fun of the 60s. No great pretense towards very deep meaning.

L'humour anglais tel qu'on l'aime: léger, acide et qui s'attaque à tout le monde. L'Angleterre de l'époque de Beatles un peu désemparée et exentrique.

Gary W. McClintockReviewed in the United States on 13 December 20015.0 out of 5 stars A Suitable Case for Laughter
Here's one I've been trying desperately to find again for the last 20 years. This is the film that makes me watch silly things like "Titanic" and "Nightwing" just to watch David Warner. The first hour on the whole ranks with the best British comedies of its time (Hard Day's Night, The Jokers, Nothing But The Best) but the seriocomic ending (with a superb closing laugh) leaves me as unsettled as Reisz's Saturday Night,Sunday Morning. Vanessa Redgrave plays Leonie, the sweet ex-wife who, though she clearly loves Morgan and his antics, is pressed into being a femme fatale by the social order (she's the rich one). David Warner is the eccentric failed artist, Morgan, who wishes he had been born to a gorilla rather than to a communist (he's the poor one). Yet Morgan is desperate to get his wife back (after having visited a zoo gorilla about his psychological problems). Irene Handl as Morgan's devoutly communist mother (she's unhappy Morgan has betrayed the working class) is a hilarious take on a mother complaining at her son's failures. It isn't a perfect film. It is nevertheless a real delight. The picture quality on the DVD is good for the price. Only special feature is the trailer, but it is a real swinging London statement in its own right.
