One of the most successful double acts of all time, Morecambe and Wise were a staple ingredient of British television for four decades, and nothing showcased their comedic brilliance more memorably than the wonderful Christmas specials that enlivened festive viewing for tens of millions of viewers.
Families across the country gathered around the box for these legendary shows - as much a part of Christmas Day as the Queen's speech and the after-dinner nap - with Eric and Ernie aided by an array of guest stars, including David Frost, Hannah Gordon, Glenda Jackson, Leonard Rossiter, Peter Barkworth, Des O'Connor and Alec Guinness.
Now you can relive those magical moments with this first volume, comprising three shows screened on Christmas Day in 1978, 1979 and 1980. Bursting with botched song and dance numbers, mangled classics, bad puns and short fat hairy legs, these ratings record-breakers show why Morecambe and Wise remain the nation's favourite comedy duo!

The first has the usual jokes, sketches, song and dance routines etc, with lots of guest stars, but somehow it just isn't very funny (to me, anyway). Maybe because it wasn't written by Eddie Braben, the man who made them so successful.
The second was recorded shortly after Eric Morecambe had one of his heart attacks, so it consists of M&W sitting and talking to David Frost about their lives and career, with guest stars joining them at times, and clips from shows done for ITV. Enjoyable, but different to usual.
The third harks back to the glory days - Eddie Braben has returned! A wonderful show, that makes the purchase worth it. Fans who know the BBC shows well will love the final 3 minutes or so, as we finally have the pay-off (literally!) of a running gag that went on for several years (Peter Cushing, anyone?). Lovely.
Five years after releasing a two disc compilation called "Morecambe & Wise - The Thames Years" what we have here is a re-release of Disc 2 from that earlier set, the first three Thames M&W Christmas specials.
Hopefully, Volume 2 when they get round to it (don't hold your breath) will have 1981, 1982 and 1983, which have never been released before. (Neither have the series from those years)
This is a step in the right direction, but as this has already been released before, couldn't they make it a bit more enticing?
