The Stooges discography is an appalling mess : aside from the official canon of records everything else - the numerous live albums (taking in about 20 shows over about 50 releases), and the 20 or so studio rarity compilations taken from the same 40 rehearsal songs - are a minefield to walk.

Here though, take note. The best of these numerous extra songs are captured on two compilations - "Original Punks", and this - "More Power". In these grooves, the Stooges canon appears to have remastered, cleaned up, and reworked so these versions are probably the best these songs have ever sounded. There is debate that these have been overdubbed and altered, but, to be frank, there's no evidence that this has happened, and no incentive : yet another Stooges reissue wouldn't benefit from any new effort as these probably sell in small numbers anyway.

Of the "Raw Power" era demos which comprise this release, "More Power" covers almost everything the band worked on in this time that didn't make the album itself : there is not one version of one song that appears on "Raw Power". Coupled with "Original Punks", you are probably missing one or two of the songs at worst - not taking into account the multitude of alternate takes : and whilst "Original Punks" features alternate mixes from 'Raw Power' and 'Kill City', this features all the extra songs, coming to a total of around 82 minutes.

In short, you get alternate versions of most of the songs intended for, but did not appear on "Raw Power", as demo recordings. There are also about 12 songs written between 1972-74 that were never officially recorded and are regarded as 'lost' Stooges songs : the equivalent of a weighty bonus CD supplement to the "Raw Power" record.

As MA Reed correctly states in his review of this title, the discography of the Stooges circa Raw Power is a total mess and much of what has been subsequently issued has been of poor to very poor sonic quality, with only the legacy edition of RP and Easy Action's Heavy Liquid being truly worthwhile purchases.

The Detroit rehearsals have, of course, been reissued ad nauseam by various small, obscure labels, usually with muffled or thin, tinny sound. So, Cleopatra should be congratulated for succeeding where others have failed in producing a version of these recordings that you might actually want to listen to more than once.

This has, inevitably, meant the use of noise reduction and some digital manipulation of the tapes, which purists may hate, but at the end of the day, if a recording is painful to listen to, what is the point of it ?

Forty years after these sessions were first recorded, no one can be sure of whether there ever was agreement on the running order for a 4th album, but here, you will find most of the original songs that would have been considered, together with a number of spirited cover versions, so it's as near as we are ever likely to get.

I have given this four stars but It seems to be exactly the same cd as the Detroit tapes (double cd ) which you can pick up for quite a few quid cheaper, its the same running order and to my ears sounds the same I read some other review which states that some Germans have tampered with this but I don't hear any difference between the two basically what i am asking is this a repackaged rip off.

be warned, apart from the 5 pre-raw power demos (gimme some skin, i got a right, tight pants, scene of the crime and i'm sick of you) all of the tracks on here have overdubs added to them which were done very recently. From reading the threads on this on the stooges forum, it would seem they were done by two german guys who own a small studio in the US and have a habit of doing this kind of thing. i bought it and hated it, buy the heavy liquid boxset instead, as at least the royalties from that will go to Iggy, James and Scott and the recordings are left as they were played in 1973.

However good it is to have the Raw Power deluxe reissue, the extras you get there are pretty insipid compared to the sheer raw punk rocknroll power you get here. "I'm Hungry" & "Hey Peter", featured for anoraks on the Raw Power reissue, are thankfully not on this great collection. Instead you get blistering classics "Till the End of the Night", "Open Up & Bleed" & the absolutely awesome "Johanna" which is better even than the version the Stooges are now playing live, & worth the price of the album alone. Just magnificent - Rock Action & James Williamson's playing at the end, is nothing short of breathtaking, & why the Stooges are such a crucial band: this is what rocknroll should be all about - if you are a Stooges fan, you NEED to own this. Plus after a while you may even get to like the - ahem - ironic version of "Money". & you also get "Louie Louie". Can I give it 10 stars please?
