Product description

Product Description

t is a fitting title: a high quality stylish collection featuring tracks taken from Paul’s albums of the last 15 years of his solo career. These 15 years have seen a constant artistic high, with each subsequent album release being heralded as ‘his best yet’. There are few artists with as many incarnations as Paul who can claim to have achieved such an ongoing renaissance, keeping each of their album releases sounding fresh and showered with plaudits. More Modern Classics’ is the long awaited follow up to 1998’s “Modern Classics” which showcased the first part of Paul Weller’s highly successful solo career. This album confirms Weller’s status as the most resilient survivor from punk’s class of '76 and outclassing and outperforming many of his earlier and later years’ contemporaries. It showcases his continuing progression as an artist, never afraid to take chances, move forward and buck trends – always staying fresh and transcending the zeitgeist. More Modern Classics continues to serve as a reminder of his wide range and gift for melody and song writing.

I'm so glad Paul chose to release more modern classics as a follow up to the original modern classics album.
many other artists have released a greatest hits collection then years later rereleased the same collection of songs in a different running order with a couple of new tracks etc. making fans buy the same stuff all over again. Paul hasn't done this which means my original collection isn't obsolete!
Modern classics has always been my favourite EVER greatest hits cd. I haven't kept up with Pauls work properly for a few years so more modern classics is a welcome addition to my collection, allowing me to get up to date with his more recent recordings. It may not be full of such well known classics as the first classics album but its pure quality from a man who i consider to be underrated the past decade or so.
If you like Pauls music, even if youre a casual fan, its a great album to listen to and familiarise yourself with.
For me it was like getting to know an old friend once again, one who has aged very well!

I have most of Weller's stuff, been collecting for years. This cd is a little disappointing as only one cd out of the three is any good in my opinion, but, if you're a big Weller fan and don't already have all these tunes you'll probably love it.

Excellent compilation by the modfather. Good option if you don't want to buy all his albums, which, lets be honest 60% of songs on his studio albums are bang average.

There's no denying that Paul Weller has had a cyclical career. From the highs of The Jam, he then found himself reaping diminishing returns, both commercially and critically, with The Style Council. So much so that by the end of the 1980's The Style Council were ignominiously dropped by Polydor which meant that Weller had to rebuild his career and reputation from scratch.

Most critics regarded him as a spent force by the early 1990's, but a run of solid albums - Wild Wood, Stanley Road and Heavy Soul - restored his critical and commercial fortunes, so that when his first solo compilation, Modern Classics, was released in 1998 it was able to boast a series of tracks that were very familiar to the record-buying public.

Since the late 1990's Weller has continued to tour and record regularly, but his profile has dropped again. So while this means that the track-listing of More Modern Classics might not contain too many songs that casual fans will instantly recognise, there's still considerable quality here.

"From The Floorboards Up", "Come On, Let's Go" and "Wake Up The Nation" are all flat-out Weller rockers that are typical of his Britpop peak in the mid 1990's. But as with his desire via The Style Council to move away from the straightjacket he found The Jam to be, there's plenty of other musical styles on offer here. "No Tears to Cry" is a little gem, a love-letter to the Northern Soul sound and "Sweet Pea, My Sweet Pea" is a delicate slice of acoustic folk, and like many songs on More Modern Classics has aged well.

The two newer tracks "Flame Out!" and "Brand New Toy" couldn't be more different. "Flame Out!

I think this is the best album I've ever bought. It's got all the essential Weller sounds, from soulful rock to soul and psychadelic sounds. You can hear a lot of his influences here with Bowie-esque, psychadelia to punk and heavy soul. I just want to keep listening to it!
If there's one song that's a bit weaker than the others, it's Wishing on a Star, but I probably don't like it so much, because I don't particularly like the original. All the Weller originals are fantastic and more than make up for it. I couldn't possibly give it anything but a 5 star rating. Worth every penny.

Great songs love some of the covers but preferred the man's own . Put all three cd's in car and listen back to back happy days.
