If you're going on holiday to Tenerife,or have been,or in fact if you've ever dreamt of living and working abroad...I'd highly recommend this book.Joe Cawley writes with such a wry sense of humour. I had tears of laughter running down my face and laughed out loud from start to finish. I just could not put it down.

I enjoyed reading about all the things that I was familiar with on Tenerife and that together with Joe Cawley's hilarious descriptions of the characters and situations helped to cheer up some wet, dreary days in the U.K.

Had it confirmed that dreams can come true....depending on how you look at things,I suppose...So long as you're willing to put in the long hours and extremely hard graft and also accept the emotional/financial consequences, and perhaps be able to laugh, eventually, at the not so good experiences.

Look forward to the sequel and anyhting else that may come out of this fantastic book...Film,T.V.etc.

This is a great book that portrays Tenerife in a tourist resort in the 1990's. The story shows how two couples struggle to make a go of a bar in the outskirts of the tourist centre.
I would recommend this to anyone who is thinking of moving to Spain to open a bar as it portrays more then the paperwork required. It charts their up and down struggle to adapt to living awa form home.
It is funny and sad in places and I really enjoyed it.

I would thoroughly recommend this book if you enjoy a good laugh and an insight into the ups and downs of leaving Britain to live and work on a paradise island. Joe Cawley describes the challenges of running a bar in Tenerife whilst telling hilarious anecdotes about the British ex-pats and holiday makers. This book brightened up a cold Scottish winter and I can't wait for a sequel.

A great read, the author has achieved not just the success of running a bar abroad, but also that rare commodity that is a tale that makes you chuckle out loud. There is as much of the characters who inhabit the bar as there is of the owners and it is hard not to read without a knowing nod to some of their foibles. A fun holiday read, but there will be some who cringe as Cawley throws a sharp light on British holiday habits, and the people that turn them into a way of life.

I wanted to read this as I am considering emigrating too. It has amused me greatly! I can identify with some of his feelings and he describes situations and characters very well indeed. Humorous and yet honest about the conflicting emotions of trying to fit into a different cultural experience, he gives insight into a way of life, running a pub in a tourist area in a hot country. I am sure none of us would imagine how many hours it takes to run a pub or that they never get time to sun themselves on the beach. The tensions of family or working together in close proximity, heat, and coping with electrical failures, financial worries, exhaustion etc and "characters" who frequent the pub who have their own different expectations of them are well described. I think it takes a very special type of person to cope with this on a daily basis.
It is always interesting to read how other people cope with the special problems in their lives. Just for a while I walked in their shoes. Looking forward to see what happens in the next book now....did it change/ Did they change? Was it for the better? Who coped best and why?

I'd had this book on my kindle for a while, not quite wanting to read it, but as soon as I started it, I was hooked.

Joe Cawley is a good raconteur and I loved their naivety as they set off to run the restaurant in Tenerife without too much thought.

I was feeling the intense heat and their exhaustion as I was reading and I really enjoyed this story.

Not "hilarious" or "laugh out funny" as some of the reviews suggest however a very enjoyable story none the less, especially for anyone contemplating opening a bar or restaurant abroad. Will definitely buy the next installment to see how the story continues.

Having had a few holidays in Tenerife and other islands I can always see the draw for hotter, better places to live, and the desire to "do better than them in the bar." I chuckled all the way through the book because when on holiday you miss all the disasters around you when you are looking for a drink and a meal. Out front of house compares nothing to out back! The final chapters of the girl and boyfriend refusing to leave the accommodation had me in stitches. It was a fun read and I really enjoyed it.
