There's already a plot synopsis above, so I won't go into that. What made this film stand out above others of the genre was the characters that it creates. In a similar way to the orginal Halloween, and Nightmare On Elm Street (to some extent), a large part of the film is spent getting to know the characters - who's good, who's bad, and consequently, when something happens to one of them, you do actually care. And the characters are actually quite good. Megan is suitably wierd, and the slightly stereotypical American high-school students aren't bad either. The actors are unlikely to win oscars for this film, but they're a lot better than most of the drivel that horror fans are fed.
The script writing is of similar quality: not up there with the best, but a long way indeed from the bottom. The script writer is no Shakespeare, but he's not someone's 12 year old nephew who's bored in his summer holidays, as seems likely in other films I have seen.
The closest comparison I can think of would have to be something like The Beyond or The House By The Cemetary by Lucio Fulci, with the ominous atmosphere, the lurking threat of something evil in the house, trying to break free. I haven't seen this film in any other shops, but hunt it down, because it's definately worth a few viewings.
I know this description of the movie sounds a bit cheesy but you have to watch the movie to really catch the atmosphere. The camera angling is absolutely wonderful, the score is brilliant, the acting is okay (except Karen Black who is always welcome) and the special effects were O.K. considering that the film had a low budget and this movies strong point was its atmosphere. And the ending is quite original too. Some of the gore scene were nice and this film was definitely worth watching as I liked it alot. Best scene probably was the one where one of the girls in Megan's school gets her skin burned to death by the steam pipes in the shower. Mirror Mirror was definitely a surprise for me. I went in not expecting much, but I came out feeling satisfied at what turns out to be a fun little horror movie that definitely has some originality.Read more ›
This is an old fashioned, bloodless horror film, that relies on its atmosphere to carry it along. The performances are all good, but although it does have a couple of excellent set pieces it does drag a lot in between. Still, its an entertaining enough film, just a little bit too much like Carrie and others of that ilk. 3 out of 5
