Now we know his life since the end of the book and the tragic outcome, it is with whistfulness and sadness I read this book again. The amazing thing is that I felt as though he was still alive reading this book, I could imagine him actually saying it out loud. I suppose, not to sound too odd, he is to me, I am always playing his music etc and even my two small children are little MJ fans.
The book is a slight glimpse into his life from the very beginnings up until 1988 when he was in the midst of his Bad Tour. There are some lovely anecdotes and stories. There is a part in the book where he mentions Elvis Presley where he writes 'As important as he was to music (Elvis Presley), black as well as white, he just wasn't an influence on me. I guess he was too early for me. Maybe it was timing more than anything else. By the time our song had come out (Heartache Hotel), people thought that if I kept living the way I was I might die the same way he did. The parellels aren't there as far as I'm am concerned and I was never much for scare tactics. Still, the way Elvis destroyed himself interests me, because I don't ever want to walk those grounds myself.' - that just blew me away...I felt so sad because at the end the parellels were there...
This book is a must for any fan or anyone who is interested in Michael Jackson. It only skims the surface and gives just enough insight, a few morsels and titbits into his life as it was up to then, but you can't help but feel there was much more left unsaid. It is a shame he never completed a 2nd volume of his life story...
A lovely book, one of my favourites and one to read over and over again if you just want to bring him back to life just for a short while.
Moonwalk, his book, his life, in his words - ghostwriters excepted! Not exactly riveting stuff - doesn't make you impatient to turn the page and read more - but worth having. Buy it for your MJ collection.
Wonderful stories of his childhood, his recording and motown years...great anecdotes about the Thriller days and just an all round fascinating story of a man like no other.
Well worth the price, could have been five times the length, truly astonishing on every page, there's something to keep you astounded with every turn of the page.
It may have been written in 1988, which was from when he started out (ages 5 - 29), but it still a fantastic read and a must for any Michael Jackson fans.
