Cincotti,Peter ~ On The Moon

BBC Review

Just like policemen, it seems that jazz singers are getting younger. Here's 21 year old Peter Cincotti; he's on his second album already as well as advertising Italian menswear, being photographed by Bruce Weber, and acting in a Kevin Spacey directed movie.

Spacey and Weber's names suggest a degree of hipness that the likes of Michael Buble would kill for, and Cincotti's music exudes a slick, contemporary vibe that recalls Jamie Cullum rather than the airbrushed BratPack stylings of many of his contemporaries. He even manages to write a third of the songs here as well as arranging most of the album;plus the choice of covers seems to be slightly more discerning than the usual trawl through the so-called Great AmericanSongbook.

Cincotti'sdelivery is warm, urbane and relaxed, particularly on the title track (which I can imagine becoming a staple of future karaoke hopefuls). His piano playing is deft and economical too. However, he's too young to have the gravitas to pull off "I Love Paris" or "St Louis Blues", which merely sound mannered and trite. The latter opens the album, and I suspect it's likely to deter anyone even remotely familiar with the song from getting as far as track 2.

But Cincotti's audience is unlikely to be interested in W.C. Handy, after all. What they want are nice tunes, sung by a nice lad with boy band looks who actually has some musical talent. And why not? Cincotti has it in abundance. --Gordon Miles
