About the Author

Fritz Reuter Leiber, Jr. (1910 - 1992) was an American writer of fantasy, horror and science fiction. He was also a poet, actor in theater and films, playwright and chess expert. With writers such as Robert E. Howard and Michael Moorcock, Leiber can be regarded as one of the fathers of sword and sorcery fantasy, having in fact created the term. Moreover, he excelled in all fields of speculative fiction, writing award-winning work in fantasy, horror and science fiction. --Wikipedia --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

This is a short story, not a book, but I am giving it five stars because it is a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars entertaining is always 27 Jan. 2017

Typical Fritz Leiber. We seem to be losing all of our original writers through attrition I just hope the next Generations step up to bat.

4.0 out of 5 stars Old Style Apocalypse 13 Jan. 2012
By Curmudgeon - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
Remember when post-apocalyptic fiction was all about fallout shelters and Geiger counters and mutations and fear of Russkies? The Cold War warped the minds and writing styles of a generation or two.

Leiber absorbed his share of that warping, but damn good writers are damn good writers, regardless. Yes, this story is dark and warped by the nuclear fears of the Cold War. But it also manages to be dreamily atmospheric, not half as negative as other post-apocs of the time, and to evoke an eerie beauty in places, even as the roentgens mount.

It's hard to go wrong with Fritz Leiber.
