Product Description

Product Description

Two classic albums from American singer Joni James, 'The Mood is Romance' and 'The Mood is Swinging', which were part of her "Mood" series.

Includes great interpretations of songs from the Great American Songbook such as "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea", "The Lady is a Tramp" and of course many more!

Aimed at the college audience that were mainly buying folk and jazzy interpretations of popular music records during the early 60s, these albums and the tracks therein show just why Joni was such a big deal. One can't help but wonder that if she had not been forced to retire what other heights her career would have achieved.

The first album here is filled with ballads while the second is filled with swinging up-tempo songs, all of them covers of classic songs from the first half of the twentieth century.

It's difficult to pick out highlights from an album filled with such great music, but the most familiar songs include I Remember You and I Get A Kick Out Of You. They sound fantastic just like the rest of the album.

4.0 out of 5 stars JONI REACHES FOR THE PARTS SHE NEVER REACHED BEFORE! 18 July 2014
By A. POLLOCK - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I have to confess here and now that Joni James has always failed to rate amongst my favourite girl singers. Her uncertain vocal pitch and girly intonation always struck me as unappealing when compared to other Fifties songbirds. However, this might be my problem alone for it’s a fact from her first hit - WHY DON’T YOU BELIEVE ME? - in 1952, Joni was rightly crowned Queen of MGM Records with fifteen US Top Ten hit singles and distinction as an early album best seller during the period 1954-1965 on account of her winsome ballad style which was generally directed toward teenage angst. Much exposure via US television gave Joni an advantage over many other chirpy songbirds of the period who may have possessed better voices but were somehow consigned to recording novelty numbers and given insufficient promotion to reach the higher echelons of popularity.

Which brings me to this combination of two related romantic collections of 1961 which with a third (the not included THE MOOD IS BLUE) ideally linked Joni with standards from the Great American Songbook and was presumably aimed at her young fans who had reached college age and older. At this point, I have to admit, the singer is at home on such ballads as I REMEMBER YOU, YOU GO TO MY HEAD and STAR EYES whilst the upbeat tracks show the singer in a new positive light with THIS COULD BE THE START OF SOMETHING, IT’S ALL RIGHT WITH ME and THE LADY IS A TRAMP among the swingers. Overall the singer and her two dozen songs gain much from the full-blooded yet sympathetic fully orchestrated arrangements supplied by Skip Martin (ballads) and Jimmy Haskell (swingers) and, voila, I’m first to admit Joni’s appeal has suddenly soared with this reviewer!

Well presented - although I would have also welcomed the original album cover graphics - this collection celebrates a singer who occupies a place in US Fifties pop history and my hope is Jasmine Records have the omitted THE MOOD IS BLUE on their planned list for future release.
