What did conclusion did Doyle come to when he sifted through historical documents? (WARNING, SOME SPOILERS) Basically, he claims the gospels were revised to combine the ministry of Jesus Christ with the anti-Roman zealotry of Judas the Galilean (NOT Judas the Betrayer). This “…confusion exploited by later Christian forgers…” better fit with the martyrdom and resurrection story that Christian leaders wanted to portray.
The insinuation that it was Judas the Galilean who was crucified when Jesus was probably stoned by the Sanhedrin is certainly plausible. Whether Jesus was crucified as a ritual initiation, I’m a bit more incredulous about. I appreciated how Doyle set the scene in the garden of his wealthy patrons (Mary, Martha, & Lazarus) and how he determined Lazarus’ significance as Jesus’ beloved disciple. I’m sure there will be plenty of skeptics who would consider Doyle’s book blasphemy, but he does a decent job presenting his case.
