However, in my opionion there were still some very good stories. My personal favorite was 'The Gorgon's Head' by Gertrude Bacon, illustrating why you should LISTEN to locals who warn of bad places to go. Another, almost Lovecraftian tale by A. Merritt titled 'The People of the Pit', involves a lost civillization of...things held at bay in remote Alaska. 'The Cube', by Charles Loring Jackson, was a creepy tale involving a girl and her doppleganger caught while fishing.
So, in short, some creepy stories to be had but many are of the supernatural rather than 'monsters' per se.
