For this review, I thought I would compare the Monster iSport Victory In Ear Headphones with my other two favourite earphones: the Sennheiser CX686 (Sennheiser CX686G Ear Canal Sports Headset - Galaxy) Sports In-Ear canal Headphones (which I use for sports, naturally enough) and the SoundMAGIC E10 Earphones (SoundMAGIC E10 Earphones - Silver/Black) (my favourite audiophile-like earphones, for really listening to music, and occasionally in the gym). All three are in the ear, with a range of tips giving a tight-fit and high isolation from outside noises (making them less suitable for cycling, for example, but good for the gym where you may want to cut out the background noise). All three have a clip to attach the lead to clothing. The Monster and Sennheiser have a rubber/plastic hook that fits into the outer ear, giving more stability when moving (e.g. jogging).

What do we need to compare?

* sound quality
* fit and comfort (especially for sports)
* robustness (again, intended for sports)
* price

SOUND QUALITY
=============

It's important to "run in" headphones and earphones - that is, play them for a decent period of time. The instructions on the Monsters recommended 20 hours to be fully "broken in", so I ran them in continuously for 24 hours, at a decent volume (leaving my MP3 player on "play all").

Sennheiser CX686 - far better than the cheap ones supplied with phones, music players etc, perfectly good for sports, excellent sound quality but bass is slightly behind the SoundMagic and Monsters.

Before you make a purchase based on the glowing reviews in the media remember that I'm writing this as someone who has had these for well over a year now. They are without doubt the BEST sounding in ear headphones I've ever used. The sound is just incredible - loud, punchy, crystal clear - really superb. When going for a run they provide a fantastic listening experience.

But unfortunately they are very poorly made. The main issue is not with the sound drivers themselves but with the cord and plug and inline remote. The remote eventually in hot weather falls to pieces with the 'glue' holding the buttons becoming so loose that the button layer fell off.

The plug also is problematic - i.e. what you plug the headphones into. It fails often and in the end the wire came loose exposing bare wire.

I have sent these back to Monster twice now and am waiting for my third pair. When those die I will have to get something else.

It's a real real shame because the sound is really so wonderful.

They are bringing out some wireless headphones....maybe that will be a solution?

I prefer in ear type headphone for their fit and size, also sound quality is very important to me.

Firstly these Monster iSport Victory headphones come in a very nice box (a big marketing ploy nowadays) but I'm more interested in the actual goods inside the box.

The headphones look fairly well made, they have a cast metal body with all other parts plastic, one thing I don't like are the flat cables that Monster have equipped these headphones with, these are notorious for fracturing as I know from previous experience of other item with flat cables, I much prefer a round cable. The cable is also equipped with a volume/play-pause control on the left hand monitor, this looks a little vulnerable to me but time will tell.

Monster recommend that you try all the silicon tips for a perfect fit, the one I found fitted best for me was the large, once in these headphones fit tight and don't move around due to the silicone ear hooks, they also block out most of the noise around you which can be either a bonus or a danger. The tip of the headphone actually swivels very slightly to allow for movement.

Onto sound quality and to be honest I was pleasantly surprised, I tried these with my Fiio E17 Alpen DAC/headphone ampFiiO E17 Portable Headphone Amplifier and USB DAC via the USB socket on my phone, listening to Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon 2011 remaster(320kbps MP3), the detail is crisp without being overblown, bass is good and vocals stand up well, treble is clear without being harsh.

These are great. The sound quality is excellent. Great bass (if you're into bass) but not overpowering. They stay in the ear very well, didn't have any problems while running. The build quality seems really good too so I don't expect these to break anytime soon. The only thing I'd "improve" is to make them wireless while keeping the same sound and build quality

OK, let me start by addressing a few of the negative reviews. If you are planning to take these out in all conditions exposed to the elements then these probably aren't the headphone for you. If you want the remote volume control to work forever then look elsewhere. If you want high quality sound (the best that I've ever had from sports headphones) and an earbud that actually stays in your ear with a snug fit then this may be just for you. Yes they are a little pricy, but I justify this by not having to buy separate headphones for sports and normal use. The build quality isn't great on the volume controller or microphone if you leave them exposed or are too rough with then, but I've had my first set for 8 months now and as headphones they are still going strong. This is despite learning the hard way of not taking care when going out running (like keeping them dry) and being a bit rough with them. I've tried a lot of brands and a lot of headphones and never repeat bought until now. This is only precautionary until the first pair dies, but I've been using the second pair for a couple of months now in daily use and the controller and microphone are fine. I sympathise with those that have had bad experiences, but this does happen for every product. Maybe I've been lucky but I don't see it. For comfort and sound quality whilst running there is nothing to beat these headphones
