The few points which could have been better are the lack of a proper military appreciation of weapons and tactics, and an overview of the system of county and parish government to those unaware of it. Furthermore, the occasional referring to this as the last English rebellion could have alluded to the Jacobite rebellions; that of 1715 included at the very least nearly 1,000 English participants, though of a different social and religious make up than the ones discussed here. Whereas 1685 was the last entirely English rebellion, that of 1715 should also be discussed.
However, those are relatively minor caveats in what is an extremely good study of the social as well as the military and political dimensions of this interesting period of English history.
Although this text is a bit limited it should be read first before reading primary source material. It led me to an important historical document, that I would not have come across, if it was not for the work of the fantastic Mr Earle.
If you like this book, I can also highly recommend other works by him on this period of history. There is no one else that captures late seventeenth and early eighteenth-century period with such clarity.
