Recorded shortly after husband John Coltrane's death,we're treated here not only to Alice's powerful gospelly piano but also the first appearance,to the best of my knowledge,of Alice on concert harp."Lovely Sky Boat" is a beautiful example of Indian inspired music from the era with Jimmy Garrison setting up a kind of drone figure for Alice to improvise against. This edition also includes as a bonus to the original lp 2 tracks that first appeared on a very hard to get record called "Cosmic Music" and a previously unissued solo track. So good value and beautiful packaging.Mention also to Coltrane guys Rashied Ali and Pharoah Sanders who fill out the music though Alice is definitely the centre of interest on this one.

Alice Coltrane's "a Monastic Trio" was the first studio Lp from 1967/68 featuring Coltrane on piano + harp with Rashied Ali / Ben Riley on drums, Jimmy Garrison- bass, plus on select tracks Pharoah Sanders on flute, bass clarinet, tenor saxophone. "Monastic Trio" contains some excellent tracks (most notably with Sanders) but is not for me, Coltrane's best Lp . the blueprints started + explored here of eastern drones, exotic scales + free-ish extended themes were to be developed on later Lp s, but overall the tracks lack the clarity of later releases such as "Universal Consciousness" or bona-fide classic Lp "Ptah - the Dhoud" in particular.

Coltrane's harp playing dominates on many tracks such as Ocean Beloved" + "Altruvista" in flurries of free-form strummed + plucked notes whilst the rhythmic core of Ali + Garrison mainly accompany her. fine for a few tracks, but i prefer the stronger focus of the later Lps + the counter balanace offered by Sanders etc on sax especially on track "Ohnedaruth" to give the sound a darker free-jazz element to the often slightly dated over-heavily scented musticism on display. Alice's moody exploratory piano playing on "I Want to See You" is excellent though. theres is do doubting the sincerity of the yearning spiritualism - just the effectiveness of some of the music.

recorded within a year of Alice's sax legend/husband John passing away - "A Monastic Trio" is an arresting + moving Lp, but i would go for the slightly later releases for a better overview of Alice Coltrane's abilities as spiritual musician + innovator. 3.5 going on 4 stars.
