Product Description

France released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: French ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), French ( Dolby Digital 5.1 ), Arabic ( Subtitles ), English ( Subtitles ), French ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN (2.35:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Commentary, Interactive Menu, Making Of, Photo Gallery, Scene Access, Trailer(s), SYNOPSIS: A man of principle is led down a sinister path in the name of patriotism in this drama co-written by the legendary political filmmaker Costa Gravas. Colonel DuPlan is a powerful but elderly officer in the French military who is found murdered in his flat after appearing on a television talk show in which he roundly criticizes the current French administration. Lt. Galois (Cecile de France) is a police detective who is part of the team investigating DuPlan's murder, and when a package of letters from one of DuPlan's former underlings arrives at the police station, Galois is ordered to read them and see if they contain any useful information. Lt. Guy Rossi (Robinson Stevenin) served under DuPlan (Olivier Gourmet) as France was at war with Algeria; while Rossi questions the wisdom of effectiveness of the conflict, DuPlan is a gung-ho officer who believes France must lead by any means necessary. Through a combination of intimidation and flattery, DuPlan wins Rossi over to his side and turns him into a valued aide who will do nearly anything to serve his leaders -- including torturing prisoners, killing adversaries, and violating the laws of war. Also starring Charles Aznavour, Mon Colonel (aka The Colonel) was the first feature-length directorial credit for Laurent Herbiet. ...The Colonel ( Mon colonel )

Excellent French film with a twist at the end. Spoken French with subtitles which we far prefer than dubbed films with stupid voices that sound nothing like the actual actors. Struggled to get this film in France so was pleased to get it from Amazon.

On the surface 'Mon Colonel' is a whodunnit: a retired French Army officer, Colonel DuPlan, is murdered after boasting on TV about war crimes during the Algerian War. The police have few clues but an army lawyer monitoring the case starts to receive excerpts from the diary of Lt Rossi, the colonel's ADC who disappeared in Algeria 50 years before. Rossi's story is told in black & white flashbacks interspersed with the modern day investigation, as he is drawn unwillingly into Duplan's orbit, and becomes increasingly complicit in the colonel's brutal but effective campaign of 'pacification' against the local Algerian population. Rossi ends up way out of his depth and his final dilemma finds its echo 50 years later.

Robinson Stevenin is convincing as the gauche, anguished Rossi but the role is something of a cipher for France's deep unease with its colonial past, and Cecile de France as Lt Galois, the contemporary investigator, isn't required to do much other than be luminously pretty, so the film is really carried by Olivier Gourmet as the charismatic martinet Col DuPlan, who alone realises the price that France must pay to hold on to Algeria. In the event it was a price that France couldn't or wouldn't pay, but it has taken nearly 50 years for it to face up to its shameful record in Algeria, and films like this and Intimate Enemies (Single Disc) [DVD] [2007] are small but important steps in breaking the conspiracy of silence.
