I've been working my way through Tardi's "Adele Blanc-Sec" and the fourth in the series is probably the best after the first volume. By this stage, Adele's character is a lot more developed and the cast of villains has already been well established. As usual, the theme of things being brought back from the dead is prominent but this volume effectively serves as a summary tieing the elements of the previous three stories together to a calamitous conclusion. The reference to Ancient Egypt is a bit of a red herring (the title translates as "Mummie madness") as devil worsship and Adele's old foe "Pazazu" also feature.

The appeal of these comics (other than to help me learn French) is that the stories are not too serious and Tardi relishes the use of the kind of melodrama that was popular in 1912 when this story is set. There are nice touches in this story to true events like the sinking of the Titanic (but not by an iceberg!) and the Gare de Lyon train crash. However, this is mixed up with more modern elements as Adele is definately not the typical demure female of this era. Besson's film of the same name draws of elements of this story and having now read the first four stories, it is clear to see where he has picked various elements from and to identify the liberties he has taken. Tardi's Adele is not quite so frothy but the police are as equally bungling and the tone of the books is probably more gruesome and full of schlock horror. This story also concludes with the author poking fun at himself. I love the fact that the character's always seem to exclaim "bon sang !" whenever they discover something shocking! My only grumble is that these books are so short. The French is not too difficult.

love it! Adele Blanc-Sec new star ? The film was good... but the cartoons better! And the attention to details Tardi gives to the way Paris used to look like at that time. Wonderful!
