Inside the back cover is a pocket to keep various bits and pieces of paper in and because it opens inwards and seems to have strong joints to the book it seems like a great addition.
The best bit of the book is that because of the spine design you can open the book right out and litterally have any two page spread flat accross each other. This means you don't have to have a regular sketchbook and not be able to sketch accross pages without seriously destroying the spine, and you don't have to delve into the ring-bound sketchbooks.
The hard cover seems pretty hard wearing and a good choice of material to protect all of those sketches buried deep inside.
Plus, the value for money from Amazon when i bought it is superb!!
Although the dimensions are printed on the amazon site, one thing that is a little misleading is the naming 'large' sketchbook, as its size is medium at best, comparable to a paperback novel. Helpfully however, it is so bound that pages can be opened to more or less a completely flat drawing space, allowing you to draw quite easily across both pages, so you can use it as an A4 pad should you need it. The size does mean that it is thoroughly portable - great for carrying with you, sketching in airports, cafes, etc.
A final comment is that, certainly for me and likely others using pencil, the paper is a little too smooth and would benefit from a bit more tooth for these mediums. Perhaps the watercolour pad would be more suited to this purpose. As a result the graphite also smudges fairly easily so watch where you're laying your hands.
However these pages are still excellent quality and are perfect for people sketching in pen.
A thing I would say is the paper is exceptionally smooth, having little tooth, and proves to have a slightly resistive quality with certain media. It's fabulous to work on with inks, felt pens etc., not so easy with water-based paints and some pencils - if you prefer these to inkwork then I would suggest looking at other books, for example the Moleskine watercolour sketchbook, or one with toothier cartridge paper.
Another thing is if your book isn't going to travel and what you want is purely a sketch book then possibly you'll need a larger format, A4 or more. The recommended retail price is quite expensive for a sketchbook of this size but at around half-price with Amazon discount they become excellent value for money.
Most sketchbooks I've tried - even cheap college sketchbooks of very ordinary cartridge paper - take a light wash, whether it's for watercolour sketching, water soluble pencils, ink washes - but this won't. This is a pretty normal thing to want to be able to do and don't think this is expecting too much. The paper appears as a wax resist does then when wetted, then goes grainy.
Binding is is fine, seems to be usual quality. But reading reviews on Amazon.com it appears that the paper changed to this one recently and it was better before.
Several sheets also had kinks in (not worth returning for - but another detraction).
It's ok for pencil/ink (line) drawing and will use for practise or experiments.

Really good quality book - I've never had a Moleskin before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. But now that I've used it for some pencil and pen sketches, I can tell why it's one... Read morePublished 1 month ago by Charlotte Ackerman
