Product Description

Review

"An excellent textbook overview of the theology of our time ... comprehensive, clearly written, fair and most informative." Journal of Religion (of the first edition)

"A distinguished and outstanding work." Theology (of the first edition)

"The coverage provided is good, with no significant gaps evident." Reformed Theological Journal

"The Modern Theologians is a unique and valuable introduction to Christian theology. [...] It is to be warmly commended as a fresh resource for anyone seeking a path into the breadth and rigours of theological conversation today, and over the past one hundred years." Revd Dr Simon Oliver, University of Wales Lampeter, Church Times

"This book represents exceptional value for money, all too rare in theological publishing. We are in the editors′ debt. Buy it, read it, and be lured onto new theological ground. I hope its spine is up to the use it will no doubt get." Philip McCosker, Reviews in Religion and Theology, 13:2

A valuable resource for anyone trying to find an entry point into understanding the cacophony of modern theologies.
John F. Brug
Wisconsin Lutheran Quarterly

From the Back Cover

The Modern Theologians provides a comprehensive and accessible overview of the main Christian theologies of the twentieth and twenty–first centuries. Each chapter is written by a leading theologian and gives a clear picture of a particular movement, topic or individual. Together these provide an unparalleled picture of the development of modern theology. The third edition includes: new and updated treatments of topics covered in earlier editions; a new section on six classic theologians of the twentieth century; expanded treatment of the natural sciences, gender, Roman Catholic theology since Vatican II, and African, Asian and Evangelical theologies; revised and updated introduction and epilogue by David F. Ford; new chapters on spirituality, pastoral theology, philosophical theology, postcolonial biblical interpretation, Pentecostal theology, Islam and Christian theology, Buddhism and Christian theology, and theology and film. As in previous editions, the text opens with a full introduction to modern theology. The Epilogue discusses the present situation and prospects of Christian theology in the twenty–first century.

Format: Paperback
This is probably best introduction in modern Christian theology I have ever read. Some essays can be difficult for begginers so I reccomend The Blackweil Companion to Modern Theology for some who first time read about modern theology (or Alister McGrath Christian Theology An Introduciont or Historical Theology: An Introduction). For others who have basic knowledge on Christian theology this volume can be very helpfull. I like mostly essasy by Karen Kilby about Karl Rahner and essays about Tillich and Thomas F. Torrence. Chapter about relation beetwen science and religion is written by Philip Clayton (physican sciences). This chapter is good but I think to fragmentent. Some general approach can be much more adequate. Someone with specific theological interest can notice that there are no chapter about some important Roman Catholic theologians (like Yves Congar, Chonu or Kung, also there isn't anything on Roman Carholic mariology) but I must notice that this is general introducion. Great book for everyone interested in Christian thought.

Good introduction to the theologians of our modern time. A course book that is used in university studies. Very academic and informative but not for the casual reader ? The student will be informed of what the university professors and doctors are teaching in university. Gives a good understanding of the science of higher criticism.

Can be a bit hard going at times but useful to use alongside other theologians to get differing views and round out your understanding.

HASH(0x98ef54d4) out of 5 stars Dissapointing 27 July 2013
By Ricardo Chica-Avella - Published on Amazon.com

It seems buyers of the previous edition got a better deal. One can put up, though reluctantly, with a schematic treatment of Lonergan but dropping the chapter on Schilllebeeckx and including Wojtyla but not Ratzinger (a serious scholar who once mentioned that the former did not know theology) in chapter 16 (a shallow treatment in terms of trends and generalities) is a serious error of judgment. One can expect to find gems by authors like Bauckham and Williams, but one wonders whether a better title for this book, with its ambitious coverage of whatever topic one can conceive as related to theology, would have been An Encyclopedia of Modern Theology. Still, there is no virtue in coverage if the chapters in part VII on Theology in various media entered at the cost of excluding one on Political Theology, treating so hastily Schilllebeeckx and Lonergan and hardly mentioning Metz.
