I am coming back to French having studied it at degree level in the mid-1970s, and neglected it ever since. I have recently completed Jubb's Upgrade Your French very successfully in conjunction with Hawkins & Towell's French Grammar in Use, and was looking for the extra dimension provided by the functional approach of this workbook and its companion grammar book. The functional approach works very well but unfortunately the work book is let down by its lack of awareness of the self-guided reader's potential difficulties. The exercises are not cross-referenced to the companion grammar, which can make it difficult to understand what the exercises are trying to test. If and when you do find the corresponding parts in the grammar they do not always introduce the structures, vocabulary etc. that are given as answers! As a result, the book really requires you to read the grammar, then read the answers before you attempt the exercises - after a suitable delay, of course, otherwise it's pointless.

I do like the functional approach of the grammar book, but the workbook needs some serious re-thinking. Jubb's book provides excellent cross-references to several grammars, not just Jubb's own, prepares you for the exercises with various advance organisers, and provides a useful timetable to work to. Applying Jubb's approach to the functional dimension of this workbook would improve the book enormously and make it far more useful. As it is I'm considering giving up on this workbook - it's too confusing - and continuing with the Using... series published by Cambridge.

This book, along with the Modern French Grammar: A Practical Guide (Modern Grammars), are set books on my French course at university. Whilst the textbook is of a good standard, I feel somewhat let down by the workbook. Firstly, I would prefer a contents page that lets you know the where the exercises for each relevant grammar points are (as in the textbook) - Section A simply says "the noun group" and "the verb group". Finding the relevant exercises is made more difficult by the fact the exercises are introduced with "this exercise practices [insert grammar point here]", which makes them rather difficult to spot (particularly when there are exercises for several different grammar points across a page or two), so you have to trawl through the pages to find what you want to practice.

Whilst working on the exercises for relative pronouns, I noticed the harder ones came first - I personally think it is better to have the easier ones first, as this allows the student to get to grips with the basics and build up their confidence before tackling the trickier exercises.

I would have also prefered it if more of the workbook had been dedicated to grammar exercises - after all, it's pointless in doing the exercises in Section B (Functions: Exposition, Attitude and Argumentation) if you haven't yet mastered the grammar!

The exercises have a star (*) rating which denotes the difficulty of the exercise (* being the easiest, *** being the hardest). This is useful if you want to find something easier or perhaps more challenging as it allows you to pick the exercise you feel is suitable to your ability.

This book was brand new in appearance although advertised as used. I had borrowed acopy from the library previously. Excellent to reinforce grammatical strucures for more advanced learners, probably not suitable for beginners. Jill
