This is a must have if you like Mulatu. The DVD is shot in B/W and all the better for it. The package is really classy with photographs and text on eight pages of nice heavy paper. A beautiful item to own. The playing is of course of the utmost Quality from start to finish. The DVD shows how many musicians were assembled for this concert. The recording is superb and either the live CD which is just the music or the DVD which has a documentary element interwoven will delight depending on the circumstance. Listen in the car or watch at home. Ethio Jazz, He invented it don't you know. Very highly recommended indeed

5.0 out of 5 stars KILLER GROOVE CONCERT FILM 29 Oct. 2010
By Richard H. Atkinson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The exotic Ethio-latin-jazz-world-groove music alone would be enough for a multitude of stars, but the black and white production - with snippets of establishment shots and documentary work - provides some nice insight into the calm temperment of ageless composer Mulatu Astaske without ever intruding long enough to distract from the concert flow. His vibes solos, as always, are ephemeral and the various band members who get to blow (especially reed men Azar Lawrence and Benny Maupin) do well. But it's the groove, man, that grabs ya'. Timeless indeed.
5.0 out of 5 stars Forget the Whole World Music Cliche 28 Oct. 2013
By Robert Taylor - Published on Amazon.com

I'm appreciative of a review I saw for this artist some time back in the "Songlines" publication, published in the UK, although I'm not a fan of the "world music" tag, as it seems to me, and a lot of others, as an odd cultural tautology, given that all music is global.

Mulatu Astatke is very likely to appeal to fans of great jazz fusion, like Miles Davis in the 70s, Return to Forever, Joe Zawinul, maybe Sonny Clark. You get the gist. Its very funky, very literate, very bop-like in its structure so that whilst it's likely to be mostly improvised on a theme, the thematic development never gets derailed leading to a some kind of cognitive dissonance for the listener. The playing is superb, from Mulatu himself, and a host of other premium artists like Phil Ranelin and Bennie Maupin. The three tiered percussion and electric guitar give the music some exciting dimensions.

Others will dissect the music better than I can, I just hope to turn a few jazz and funk fans of the western world on to some great music.

What can I say, this music simply transports you to another realm. One of the best jazz albums. The opening track slowly build up and reached the skies. Remarkable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing 2 Nov. 2013
By Josef K. - Published on Amazon.com

This is amazing album. I am not big fan of live albums but this one hits my personal top 5 live albums, with, believe it or not Ramones - It's Alive, MC5 - Kick Out of Jams, Talking Heads - The Name of this Band, Johny Cash at Folsom Prison ...

3.0 out of 5 stars this rates "OK I Guess If You Like That Sort of Thing 6 Dec. 2014
By Fesenjen - Published on Amazon.com

In the world of undemanding, unchallenging entertainment, this rates "OK I Guess If You Like That Sort of Thing." Which I think is actually what it set out to do. You'll be chit-chatting away as it plays because it certainly requires very little direct attention.
