I recently bought a second-hand android tablet, which had a slot for a 3g SIM but none provided. Although I use orange for mobile calls, I knew 3 works in my local area and they seem to be the best value for PAYG data.

The card came with 1G already loaded, and costing under a tenner, I'm already onto a winner! Subesquent top-ups cost £10 for 1 further GB. Only downside is there is a 30 day time limit, but I'm sure I could munch my way through 1GB in that time! Even if you are out of time/credit; the "three" website is still available for topping up (either there and then with a credit/debit card, or typing in the number from a voucher bought from a shop)

I have not used it in anger away from home as yet, so can't comment on 3's coverage in general. I would suggest checking with friends/colleagues to see if anyone you know is on 3, and find out what the coverage is like.

This pre-pay SIM is a very good value for money (£3.5 per gigabyte of data). The only problem is the Three UK relatively poor signal strength and coverage - it depends on your location a lot and the connection is slow more often than I want it to be.

The data transfer speed can be reasonable but there is a substantial delay between when you enter the URL (or click on a link) and when the result webpage opens. This connection cannot be used for online gaming but is OK for general web browsing, emails and youtube videos.
Sometimes it gets hanging and I have to give it a kick by disconnecting and re-connecting again.

The behavior is roughly the same when I use it in either my Mi-Fi device or in a dongle or in the build-in SIM card adapter in my laptop - I believe it all depends on the mobile network.

Verdict: It is so cheap that it is worth buying this pre-paid SIM anyway just to try it and see whether the signal is good in your area or not.

I wouldn't touch Three with a barge-pole. The Customer Service is horrendous. I made three attempts trying to get the system to change my details online. Eventually I gave up and phoned. I navigated through the menu only to be told that I was at the wrong department and needed to be transferred. I was sure I'd listened to the options carefully. However, when I got through, it was clear that I wasn't being understood so I settled for just making a 1Gb top-up. They took the money from card but the data sim continued to report "Out of Funds". I entered their call-queueing system again. This time I made sure I selected the right options but when I eventually got through I was told I'd be transferred & had to wait again! I'm suspicious that they are milking the wait time. The operator that answered told me that the payment had been taken but that the top-up hadn't been activated. I wanted to know why not and what would happen next time? He seemed to think that I'd have to phone each time I wanted a top-up. Every second sentence during this conversation the operator excused himself, put the line on hold, and then came back. He kept doing this until the automated system cut me off. Don't say you haven't been warned.

This was our first attempt at a 3G connection using our shiny new Toshiba AC100-10U Tegra smartbook (Android 2.2), so we were feeling some trepidation as the SIM was inserted.*

No worries, it just went online when we followed the very clear instructions. The '3' website showed our 1GB credit once we had logged on to it.

Sitting in a car park waiting for my wife is now a relaxing experience, and not as expensive as some deals. Playing with the bundled application 'Fring' (like Skype for Android) it makes calls all around the world for similar connection costs.

    * PS Our AC100 has a label near the SIM slot (behind the battery) that shows the WRONG way to insert it - the almost invisible moulded-in image on the case shows the correct way. <sigh>

Works as expected not only in this country with good reception, but also abroad in the Feel Free destinations. Abroad it connects automatically to the best roaming partnered provider - Orange or Free, depending on the signal strength. Note that this sim is only for mobile broadband dongles or MiFi types and not phones. Note, that in a non Feel Free destination, it will not connect at all as it would require money on the account in order to pay for the high cost roaming tarif.

I bought this card for my Scotland holidays and had to find out that the 3 mobile net was only available in the big cities. If you don't travel around too much this SIM is a great deal but if you do, you might run into trouble.

Having tried Vodafone, Giffgaff (O2) and T-Mobile, the Three SIM card seems to be in another league. I simply put it into my TP-LINK M5350 MIFI device and I was up and running - no messing around trying to do top-ups, register my account, etc. And the performance is much better than all the other SIM cards I've tried - I've just tested it and got download speeds greater than 8Mb/s, the other cards struggled to achieve 1Mb/s. A bit expensive, but probably worth it for the lack of hassle.
