At a cost of only £250.00 I wasn't expecting the latest thing in Olympic racing bikes. I wanted a starter bike for exercise and fun. I already had a hybrid which is fine for commuting, but I've always wanted a road bike - so I bought one. It's probably no better than any other cheap bike, but it has a sturdy lightweight aluminium frame and looks the business. It comes complete with Shimano STI tourney gears which means you don't have to take your hands away from the brakes when you change gear. I had the bike assembled by my local bike shop which was just as well as the bottom bracket (don't ask) was the wrong size. Bike Direct authorized the fitting of a replacement and refunded me the extra cost. The bike came fitted with toe clips, but these were too small for me so I have replaced them with DMR mountain bike pedals. I have also replaced the tyres with Marathon (Kevlar) puncture resistant tyres for extra peace of mind. Now all I need is a velodrome!

Received my bike and assembled it with 1 hour. Very straightforward.
I took the bike out and did a 25km cycle. I stopped a few times to adjust my seat height. An Allen key is required for this so don't forget one.
The biggest complaint I have is the brakes. They do not seem to have much stopping power. I will be changing the brake blocks to see if this improves. But I have been used to hydraulic disc brakes on my mtb so maybe I am expecting too much.
A slight 2nd complaint is that when your hands are on the drops I feel it quite awkward to grab the brake levers. I think I have my bars in the correct position as they are level and comfortable when cycling. I may need to take the bike to my local bike shop to be checked.
A silly small detail is the routing of the cables going to the back of the bike they look to be routed down the wrong side of the bike. This is a small detail but I wonder if the people assembling the bikes even ride a bike!

I don't want to seem too negative as I think it's a great bike for the price.
I would recommend this as a first road bike.

6 months into owning this bike, I can report the following...

First of all, it really is good value (I bought it for £220 so very good) - has many of the features that I would expect to find on bikes of >£400 from my local shop. When it's tuned well, it rides really well and as a relatively unfit cyclist I'm generally able to cruise at 15-20mph without too much sweating. I don't regret buying this bike

However, some of the parts have already begun to wear - the freewheel is already showing signs of wear and the callipers corroded quite quickly. I probably could have done with cleaning it more often but it hardly was ever allowed to get really dirty. Most of the parts are still doing alright and the frame is solid so generally not bad but it needs more care than I'd expect really.

It has also recently survived being hit by a car quite well (car pulled out of t-junction into me - fairly limited damage to bike)
