Product description

Product Description

In The Mist is the artist purely distilled. It is the music of Harold Budd at its most raw, emotive and minimalist. In addition, Harold is writing for string quartet. In The Mist is comprised of three distinct movements. Tracks 1-5, The Whispers, are minimalist, tonal, sometimes tone-bending piano compositions. Tracks 6-8, The Gun Fighters, are more dramatic piano compositions with sparse electronic effects and percussive elements. Tracks 9-13, Shadows, are new Harold Budd string quartets, which add an additional component of interest - minimal, abstract, moody compositions. All Music Guide calls Harold "an American ambient/neo-classical composer". He is absolutely the World's number one minimalist, ambient, modern classical composer. That said, he abhors the word ambient. "Ambient: Everytime I read this word I cringe: I've been kidnapped by something I neither know of nor care about; it's better by 1000 times than "New Age" from 2 decades ago, but still..." Although his work is frequently identified as ambient, minimal and occasionally classical, these reductive labels do not do justice to the complexity and quiet beauty of his work.

Review

First impressions. VERY empty. A sad edge to a lot of the pieces. Nice choice of synthetic sounds.... Damn that's an empty landscape. De Chirico must be sh****g himself. --Andy Partridge

Tone bending: Interesting. Mike and I spent a lot of time getting a particular feel or sound I thought should be there. It all began with the 4tets on the first day's recording. I love string music but I hate the sceeching sound of string 4tets, thus we got to work after lunch. Took the highs out, softerned some attacks... very slight chorus reverb... then I asked for a harmonizer set at 101: no harmonizer, so: on Mike's program we simulated that, or close to it, and that was it. In fact, except for the first piece, we used it for the entire mix (not every piece "harmonized", however, -- piece-by-piece adjustments, alterations...) --Harold Budd

A few words - if you are familiar with, and fond of Harold's work, I am certain you will not be disappointed by this new collection, although it bares a certain similarity to his previous output in terms of form and content, at least that is true for the first 8 tracks in the collection where we have the somewhat diffusive moody ambience we are accustomed to hearing, replete with carefully chosen notes descending onto a broadly textured canvas, to bask in the echo chamber.

Then, to my surprise, the album veered off into rather muted string-based orchestral pieces - pleasant, thought-provoking, but for me, rather out of sync with the other pieces. It is as though we have two bodies of work, joined at the hip.

The orchestral pieces will no doubt find their way into cinema one day, as haunting back-drops to something quietly miserable.

Overall, this would not rank as my personal favourite album by HB, but, regardless of that - 4 stars out of 5.

A long career in music is not always a good sign. Here is a divine blessing. Harold Budd is in great shape and this album shows once again his great talent. In line with other major recent works such as "Avalon Sutra" and, better yet, in the line of great older works such as "The Pearl" or "White Arcades". Absolutly indispensable.

You can't help but admire Harold Budd's work ethic. For someone who technically dislikes the instrument he plays and the very name 'ambient', it's a blessing he has the ability to compose music so exquisite, relative to that very genre.

Thankfully - 'In The Mist' is another wonderful selection that starts with that tried and tested minimalist approach. It's the way I love to listen to his music - just Harold, his piano and occasional accompaniments, where each note played is like a mini symphony, creating depth and substance to each piece, when all is so sparse and minimal. Listen to the first track 'Haru Spring', every single resonated note has a prolonged life that majestically merges with the next pressed key. Even when no keys are played, this enriching sound continues.

'The Whispers' and 'The Startled' follow in similar vein - and these first three beauties are somewhat reminiscent ..well lets say - they remind me of music relevant to two past...dare I say it: "ambient masterpieces" - 'The Pearl' and 'The Plateaux of Mirror'.

The tone changes slightly on 'The Foundry' (for Mika Vainio) and 'The Art of Mirrors' (after Derek Jarman) - just simple piano with additional keyboard variants - and though equally divine, I can't help wonder how they would sound with just solo piano?

And then we're back to just Budd and subtle piano with the lovely 'Three Fingered Jack'.

The mood and style changes again with 'Greek George' and 'Black Bart'. Both lack that calming ambient vibe, having a more contemporary feel with eerie sound affects - perfect film score material.

I,m a big Eno fan, Harold Budd has collaborated with Eno a few times, His work is every bit as good,
"In the mist" is a brilliant piece of work.
Great to chill out to, love it as background.
Great for a walk along a deserted beach.
This stuff will be around for years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Work By Mr. Budd.... 19 Oct. 2012
By Joe Mugsy - Published on Amazon.com

....How can some reviewers can say there is "nothing new" with this recording? I have heard most of Mr. Budd's cds and I have not experienced anything like this particular one! Especially with the string quartet!!!! It is a fantastic recording for listening to on an overcast Autumn's day. Mellow...melancholy...somber...relaxing after a hard day's work. As someone stated before, Mr. Budd can say almost as much with silence as he can with musical notes. "Nothing new"??? More like "Nothing Else" compares to this masterpiece. It is a great deal more than a lot of his other "acclaimed" works. Get it! You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Budd: In The Pocket 4 Nov. 2011
By DAVID HALL - Published on Amazon.com

Harold Budd's latest cd is an absolute gem. Quiet, beautiful, ambient. Mostly piano, and .... space. Harold Budd knows how to work with silence and space like very few musician/composers. Rather than list song titles, info etc. let me simply cut to the chase. If you are interested in meditative, beautiful refreshment - musically, you mght sample this cd on Amazon as I did. If you do, bet you'll purchase it as I did. And, if you do you'll be pleased you did, as I am. Most highly recommended.
