4.0 out of 5 stars Mississippi Delta Blues Jam Vol. 2 10 Jun. 2008
By Stuart Jefferson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Approximately 72 min. Good sound. This is the second volume of Arhoolie's (Chris Strachwitz) recordings during the Mississippi Blues Festival in 1969. The only exception is a track by Bukka White-Mixed Water, which was recorded in 1963 in Berkeley,California. The range of artists is much narrower than Volume 1,being made up of "Sleepy" John Estes,Nathan Beauregard, and the aformentioned Bukka White. Estes here re-creates Need More Blues,a song he did around 1937. On his tracks,Estes is accompanied by a second guitarist and a harmonica player, both sympathetic to Estes' style. Nathan Beauregard, blind most of his life,is a singer-guitarist who some say was approaching 100 years old at the time of these recordings. While probably untrue,he nonetheless sounds old both in his style of playing and voice. He,too,is accompanied by a second guitar which fills in some of the holes in the music, but doesn't clutter it up. Of the three musicians here,Bukka White is probably the most well-known. Accompanied by his still effective slide guitar, his voice is still one of the most arresting instruments in delta blues. Be aware that the final track by White is a "talking" blues,a story about drinking and what happens when you do. White recalls several adventures from his past, and while it's interesting the first time around,it's nice that it's at the end of the cd,so it can be eliminated if you're not in the mood. Together with Volume 1,these songs are good, important recordings, that should be heard by a wider audience.
